The short answer

Klimt belongs to all three categories, depending on the question asked

If we talk about its decorative universe - sinuous line, flat surface, gold, plant motifs, dialogue with architecture and applied arts - Klimt comes under theArt Nouveau, called Jugendstil in German-speaking countries.

If we talk about what his works represent - love, death, desire, pregnancy, destiny, music, myth and psychic forces - he is deeply symbolist. If we finally look for his most accurate historical affiliation, Klimt is a major figure in the Viennese secession, founded in 1897, of which he was the first president.

Don't confuse anymore

Three words that don't classify the same thing

The categories overlap because art around 1900 circulates between painting, architecture, posters, furniture, jewelry and literature. They become useful as soon as we understand their level.

European language

Art Nouveau

Broad term for an international movement seeking modern art adapted to contemporary life.

  • Decorative line and rhythm
  • Stylized nature
  • Unity between fine and applied arts
  • Posters, architecture, furniture, jewelry
For Klimt: gold, patterns, silhouettes and decorative surface.
German-speaking name

Jugendstil

The word comes from the Munich magazine Jugend. It designates Art Nouveau in the German-speaking space, with local variations.

  • Germany and Austria
  • Graphics and illustrated magazines
  • Sometimes more geometric shapes
  • Proximity to arts reform
For Klimt: the cultural context of the new German-speaking style.
Ideas and topics

Symbolism

Symbolism refuses to limit art to copying the visible. It gives form to ideas, emotions and invisible forces.

  • Myths and allegories
  • Dream, desire, death, destiny
  • Ambiguity rather than clear narrative
  • Figures loaded with meaning
For Klimt: Judith, Danaé, Hope and the Beethoven Frieze.

The most accurate historical label

The Viennese Secession is not just a style

The Secession was first and foremost an artists' association and an exhibition institution. In 1897, Klimt and several companions left the Künstlerhaus, considered too conservative. They wanted to exhibit freely, invite foreign avant-gardes and place painting, sculpture, architecture and decorative arts on an equal footing.

Klimt becomes its first president. The group publishes the magazine Sacrum Worm and opened his own building in 1898. Saying "Klimt is a secessionist" is therefore historically very concrete: he participated in the founding, organization, exhibitions and visual identity of the movement.

But not all Secession artists painted like Klimt, and Klimt left the group with his relatives in 1905. "Viennese Secession" designates a network and a project more than a single formal recipe.

Recognize your style

Four clues visible in a work by Klimt

01 · Surface

Depth flattens

Bodies can remain modeled, while clothing and backgrounds become fields of patterns.

02 · Ornament

The decor carries meaning

Spirals, eyes, triangles, rectangles and flowers do not fill a void: they distinguish forces and characters.

03 · Material

Gold transforms painting

Gold leaf, silver and mosaic effects make the painting a precious object rather than a simple illusionist window.

04 · Symbol

The subject remains open

A hug, pregnancy or biblical heroine become images of life, death, desire and transformation.

Real Vienna and graphic culture

A constructed, printed and exposed movement

The Viennese Jugendstil does not only live in paintings. It unfolds in architecture, posters, a magazine, exhibitions and a new way of presenting art.

The classification changes depending on the work viewed

Klimt did not adopt an identical formula for forty years. Its historicist beginnings, the symbolist turn, the golden period and the late landscapes constantly shift the balance.

Stylistic timeline

From historicism to unclassifiable modernity

1876 - 1892

Historicalist training and decor

Klimt trained at the School of Applied Arts and worked with Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch. Commissioners from theaters and museums still use academic language.

1895 - 1897

Symbolist turn

Allegories become more personal and disturbing. The Klimt Database here locates its decisive distance from historicism.

1897 - 1905

Viennese secession and Jugendstil

Klimt founded the Secession, chaired the association, exhibited internationally and developed a flatter, graphic and decorative language.

1901 - 1911

Gold, mosaic and total work

Judith I, there Beethoven frieze, The Kiss and the Stoclet frieze combines symbol, body, gold and architecture.

1912 - 1918

Late color

Gold is going backwards. Portraits and landscapes become more colorful, sometimes close to expressionism or decorative abstraction, without being reduced to classic Jugendstil.

What labels should not do

Classify without reducing

Klimt is not "just decorative"

Ornament organizes the tension between body and surface. It can signify the desire, protection, threat, wealth or dissolution of the individual.

Not all Klimt is golden

His beginnings are historicist, his drawings often bare and his late landscapes dominated by color. The golden period is central, but relatively short.

Art Nouveau and symbolism are not mutually exclusive

The first word can describe the form and the second the content of the same work. Judith I or The Kiss work precisely by this superposition.
