Van Gogh House in Zundert
On the exact spot where Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, a memorial house tells the story of the childhood, family, and landscapes that preceded the painter. But the building visible today is not the original house: the visit is worthwhile precisely because of this story of traces, disappearances, and transmission.

We visit the birthplace of Van Gogh and a museum dedicated to his childhood, but not the actual house preserved as it was in 1853. The family parsonage was demolished in 1903.
The Van GoghHuis helps you understand what remains: the plot, the family well that was rediscovered, the recreated garden, the proximity of the church and cemetery, the archives, and above all the topography of a village that Vincent carried within him long after leaving.
From the family parsonage to the Van GoghHuis
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in the parsonage of the Reformed Church of Zundert. His father Theodorus, known as Dorus, was a pastor; his mother Anna Cornelia Carbentus managed the household, drew, and passed on to the children a careful observation of nature.
The boy grew up with Anna, Theo, Elisabeth, Willemien and Cor. The environment was Protestant in a predominantly Catholic village, rural and oriented toward the fields, nurseries and farm workers. Vincent left home for boarding school in 1864, returned in 1868, then left in 1869 to work for the art dealer Goupil & Cie in The Hague.
Having become too dilapidated, the family house was demolished in 1903. The museum opened in 2008 brings together the replacement parsonage and a neighboring patrician house through contemporary architecture. Its value lies less in the illusion of an interior that remained intact than in the continuity of the place.
A stillborn brother received the name Vincent exactly one year before the painter's birth.

The permanent exhibition is an audiovisual journey about childhood, family, and the memory of Zundert. It is complemented by a documentation center, an archive collection, and exhibitions of modern or contemporary artists inspired by Van Gogh.

The village is experienced as a constellation of traces.
The official short walk around the birthplace takes about twenty minutes. To look, read, and take photos, allow about an hour. Everything is concentrated in a tight radius around the Markt and the Van Goghplein.

Biographical roots, not a childhood style
Van Gogh only became an artist around the age of twenty-seven. Therefore there is no "Zundert period" comparable to Nuenen, Arles, or Saint-Rémy. Nevertheless, the village helps to understand four deep commitments in his work.
Looking slowly
The garden, paths, and countryside teach an attention to the seasons, trees, nests, and agricultural work.
The peasant world
The pastor's son grew up in contact with a village of farmers and would still describe himself as a "peasant of Zundert".
Writing to stay connected
Distance fosters a correspondence where Theo becomes material support, aesthetic interlocutor, and family memory.
A transformed matrix
Preaching, Bible, and moral vocation precede painting; the artist would later shift this quest toward work and nature.

Maison Van Gogh and Zundert
Does Van Gogh's original birthplace still exist?
No. The parsonage where Vincent was born was demolished in 1903. The current museum occupies the birthplace and incorporates the pastoral building built later.
Does the Van GoghHuis display original paintings by Vincent?
Not permanently like a large painting museum. The venue relies on interactive presentations, archives, and exhibitions of artists inspired by Van Gogh. Exceptional loans may be arranged.
What is there to see in the museum?

How much time should I allow?
