The style of Leonardo da Vinci
Contours that breathe, faces crossed by thought and landscapes that dissolve in the air: here is how to recognize your painting without reducing Leonardo to sfumato alone.
The short answer
Eight characteristics, one ambition: to make life visible
Leonardo's style unites scientific observation and poetic invention. He not only copies appearance: he seeks the causes of movement, light, emotion and depth.
I · The skin of the air
Sfumato is not blurry

The Mona Lisa · around 1503 -1519
Almost invisible transitions
The word comes from sfumare, "dissipate like smoke". Around the eyes and mouth, Leonardo avoids the hard line. Very thin translucent layers gradually darken the flesh: the expression changes with distance and the point of fixation.
Sfumato therefore produces active uncertainty. It makes the shape breathe, connects the figure to the air and prevents the face from freezing into a mask.

II · Building unity
Pyramids, diagonals and living groups
In Leonardo, geometry does not show itself: it organizes action.
The Last Supper · around 1494 -1498
A perspective serving drama
All the lines of the refectory converge towards the head of Christ. However, the scene does not become still: the apostles react in waves, united in four groups of three.
Calm center, agitated periphery, sharp intervals and chain gestures transform a religious doctrine into an immediately readable human event.

Saint Anne · around 1503 -1519
A pyramid that starts moving
Anne, Mary, Jesus and the lamb fit together in a triangular mass. But the twists, arms and gazes create continuous circulation. Geometric stability thus contains a story of desire, restraint and sacrifice.

Gestures, looks and "movements of the mind"

A portrait surprised by an event
Cecilia Gallerani does not pose head-on. Her bust, head, hand and ermine rotate in different rhythms, as if someone had just entered. The portrait contains a before and an after.
Leonard calls moti mentali the inner movements that the body makes visible. A raised finger, a half-open mouth or an oblique gaze becomes a verb.

The finger pointing upwards, the smile and the body emerging from the shadows not only describe the saint. They directly involve the viewer. The reduced composition intensifies the psychological relationship.

IV · The world as an organism
Atmospheric landscape, water and geology

Depth through air
In the distance, contrasts decrease, colors cool, and shapes lose their sharpness. This atmospheric perspective complements the geometric perspective: distance becomes a physical modification of light.
Rocks, streams and valleys are not just settings. They demonstrate Leonardo's interest in the erosion, whirlwinds, strata and slow transformations of the Earth.

How did Leonardo obtain these effects?
| Step | Process | Visible effect |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing | Separate studies of hands, heads, draperies, anatomy and movements. | A credible figure even before color. |
| Underlay | Installation of masses, shadows and general architecture. | The tonal unit precedes the detail. |
| Modeled | Progressive passages between light, half-tone and shadow. | Volumes without rigid outline. |
| Glacis | Very thin and translucent layers, repeated at several times. | Optical depth and sfumato. |
| Repentances | Movements and corrections during work. | A composition thought of as research. |
| Experience | Sometimes unconventional techniques, particularly for The Last Supper. | New effects, but sometimes very fragile. |
To remember: style is not a uniform recipe. Leonardo adapts his process to the support, subject and psychological effect sought.
VI · Visual test
How to recognize a "Leonardesque" painting?
Look at the edges
Are they drawn by a line or produced by the passage from light to shadow?
Follow the gestures
Do hands and looks form a coherent narrative chain?
Test the depth
Is the distance becoming bluer, lighter and less detailed?
Look for the structure
Does a pyramid or discrete axis stabilize moving figures?
Observe ambiguity
Does the expression remain open rather than reduced to a single emotion?
Stay careful
A dark sfumato is never enough to prove autography: workshop and disciples imitated it.

Frequently asked questions
Leonardo's style in seven answers
What is Leonardo da Vinci's artistic style?
It belongs to the Italian High Renaissance, but its experimental naturalism, its sfumato and its psychological research give it a unique place.
What is sfumato?
A very gradual transition between light and shadow, achieved by thin layers, which erases hard contours without simply blurring the image.
What is the difference between sfumato and chiaroscuro?
Chiaroscuro organizes volumes by light contrast; the sfumato melts the passages between these values.
Why do his characters smile?
Smiling allows you to express a mobile mental state. Transitions around the mouth prevent a definitive emotional reading.
Why are the landscapes blue in the distance?
Leonardo observes that the thickness of the air reduces contrasts and cools colors: this is atmospheric perspective.
Was Leonardo using oil paint?
Yes, especially on panels, because the oil allows the slow transitions, glazes and restarts necessary for its modeling.
Can we recognize a Leonardo only by sfumato?
No. His students took up this effect. Attribution requires provenance, scientific examinations, underlying drawing and comparison with sure works.
