Klimt's erotic drawings: line, model and look
Thousands of sheets, often drawn in pencil on Japanese paper, reveal a more direct Klimt than in his golden paintings. The line observes a posture, an abandonment, a tension - while asking the question of the way we look at the models.
Editorial approach: this article analyzes historical nudes preserved by museums. It distinguishes anatomical study, preparatory drawing and explicitly erotic images, without reducing the models to a simple motif.

In Klimt, eroticism arises less from detail than from presence
His erotic drawings show women naked, undressed, lying down, embracing or absorbed in an intimate experience. They are distinguished from the traditional academy because bodies are not always disguised as goddesses or ancient allegories.
Klimt draws from a live model. He looks for a position, a gesture or the curve of a garment with extreme economy. Some drawings prepare paintings like Medicine, Water Snakes II, The kiss or The bride. Others acquire autonomy and circulate as works on paper.
Their graphic freedom is real; their context remains asymmetrical. A famous man observes and preserves the image of often anonymous models. Looking at these sheets today therefore requires holding together the power of the line and the question of the power of the gaze.
Nude, study and erotic drawing: don't confuse everything
Catalogs and museums use specific terms. The same sheet can, however, belong to several categories depending on its function and reception.
A body without clothing
The word first describes a subject. A nude can be anatomical, academic, symbolic, maternal, tragic or erotic. Nudity alone is not enough to define intention.
Preparatory research
Klimt multiplies the tests of gestures, profiles, hands and draperies before painting. The sheet tests a possibility without necessarily fixing the final composition.
An image full of desire
Pose, proximity to bodies, autoeroticism or attention to intimacy give certain sheets an explicitly sexual dimension. After 1912, several were designed as autonomous works.

The paper remains almost empty, but the body appears present
Klimt's drawing does not seek to fill the entire sheet. A few contours are enough: a nape, a shoulder, a hip, the fold of a fabric. Emptiness is not an absence; it allows the gaze to reconstruct what the pencil does not describe.
Around 1903 -1904, the artist largely abandoned black chalk and brown wrapping paper for a hard, pointed pencil, on lighter and often larger Japanese paper. The trace becomes fine, sometimes almost metallic. This graphic precision responds to the flattening and precious materials of his painting.
The line is not uniform, however. She may hesitate, come back several times, strengthen herself around a face then lighten on a limb. This change in pressure records less a complete anatomy than a path of the gaze.
Four graphic mechanisms
A discontinuous silhouette
The line stops and lets the paper complete the body. This economy gives the figures an almost immaterial lightness.
A pose sought several times
Klimt redraws arms, profiles and inclinations. Repentances make visible for the duration of the gaze.
The fabric becomes movement
A few curls and folds indicate underwear, dress or blanket, while accentuating the presence of the body.
The decor disappears
Without detailed interiors or narrative accessories, the pose becomes the main event of the image.
Eight leaves, eight ways of observing
All images are displayed without cropping to preserve the scale of the gesture, the margins and the relationship between the figure and the paper.

The weight on one leg
The slight swaying of the hips is enough to give balance to the body. Details remain rare; position is everything.

Rest and tightening
The figure folds into a vertical format. The lines of the legs and back make up a compact structure.

Body without gravity
Isolated position prepares the floating universe of Medicine. The body is both a real model and an element of an allegory.

Two bodies united by a network of lines
The horizontal drawing refuses a clear hierarchy between the figures. The embrace reads as a single moving shape.

Towards the Kiss
The standing couple helps to understand how Klimt moves from a bodily search to the enveloping mass of the golden picture.

Variation and coexistence
Two attitudes occupy the same sheet. The drawing functions as a reserve of possibilities rather than as a completed scene.

Eve and the seated figure
The sheet combines preparatory study and independent observation. The bodies move from one project to another.

The face as rhythm
The profile, hair and inclination of the head prepare a wall figure while maintaining the intimacy of an observed portrait.
In the workshop: models, waiting and rehearsal
The testimonies describe a workshop where several models could wait, rest or move while Klimt worked. He grasped a posture when it caught his attention, without always imposing a rigid academic pose.

The historic workshop in 1917
Photographed by Moriz Nähr, the space recalls the coexistence between monumental paintings, fabrics, objects and work on paper.

The reconstructed workshop at Klimt Villa
The current visit helps to understand the scale of the place, but a reconstruction does not make it possible to restore the conditions experienced by each model.
Observe
A daily posture or movement catches the eye before a specific project is even decided.
Trace
The pencil quickly follows a few contours, reinforces a gesture and leaves large areas intact.
Vary
The same attitude can be taken from several angles, with other arms, draperies or inclinations.
Transform
A study sometimes joins a painting; other sheets remain independent or are selected for publication.
Freedom of pose, power of the artist
The naturalness and abandonment of Klimt models have often been praised. This quality should not, however, erase the social structure of the session: the artist chooses, draws, preserves and signs; models are rarely named in catalogs.
What the line makes possible
It avoids academic finishing and can record a non-heroic posture, a non-idealized body, fatigue or a moment of interiority.
What the archive erases
The biography of the models, their working conditions, their choices and their interpretation of the sessions often remain unknown.
What the viewer should do
Resist both simplifications: condemn all nudity as exploitation, or automatically celebrate each pose as emancipation.
Klimt's eroticism is not only in the represented body: it is found in the way a line approaches, insists, interrupts and lets the gaze continue.
Preparatory studies or independent works?
The answer changes depending on the date and the drawing. The two functions are not incompatible: a sheet born to prepare a painting can then be recognized as a work in its own right.
| Type | Function | Indices | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation study | Test a gesture or orientation | Multiple variations, targeted outline, little context | Figures for Medicine |
| Composition study | Prepare the relationship between several bodies | Groups, directions, nested masses | Couple linked to Kiss |
| Portrait study | Examine dress, profile, hand or silhouette | Draperies and attitudes linked to an order | Portraits of Viennese society |
| Standalone drawing | Explore the body for itself | Tightened image, completed presence, absence of corresponding table | Late nudes after 1912 |
| Image published | Accompany a text and circulate to a chosen audience | Selection and reproduction in collotype | Dialogues of courtesans, 1907 |
How erotic drawing becomes central
Academic training
Klimt masters figure drawing in the decorative and historicist framework. Mythology then legitimizes nudity.
Real bodies and faculty paintings
Studies for Philosophy, Medicine and Case law break with the ideal nude and fuel controversy.
Hard pencil and Japanese paper
The trace is becoming more refined. Klimt develops a more precise, flatter and more sensual drawing, parallel to the golden period.
Water snakes and female intimacy
Dozens of studies explore elongated bodies, female couples, and autoeroticism.
Dialogues of courtesans
Fifteen drawings are reproduced in a luxury edition translated by Franz Blei and linked with the Wiener Werkstätte.
Growing autonomy
Erotic nudes are no longer just studies. Several sheets become independent and sought-after images.
The Bride and the latest studies
Klimt prepares his large unfinished painting with more than 140 drawings, mixing sexuality, dreams and symbolist stories.
From intimate drawing to decorative painting
These works show how the body's research moves from paper to painting, then to ornament, myth and total work.

Water Snakes II
Erotic studies transformed into an aquatic and decorative world.

The kiss
The gesture of the couple enveloped by the golden surface.

The Embrace
The body becomes rhythm in an architectural environment.

Understanding Klimt's erotic drawings
How many drawings did Gustav Klimt make?
More than 4,000 drawings are known, compared to around 200 paintings. A large part is devoted to the female body.
Are all her nudes erotic?
No. Some are anatomical studies, pose research, preparations for an allegory, portrait or monumental painting.
What techniques did Klimt use?
He used black chalk and brown paper in particular, then favored hard pencil on light Japanese paper around 1903 -1904.
Are Klimt models identified?
Rarely. The archives name certain women around him or professional models, but most figures on paper remain anonymous.
Were these drawings exhibited during Klimt's lifetime?
The majority remained in the workshop or circulated to amateurs. Fifteen sheets were, however, published in 1907 in the Dialogues of courtesans.
Why did these drawings shock?
They show real bodies and sometimes intimate gestures without the protective distance of mythology. In conservative Vienna, this frankness was described as unhealthy or pornographic.
What's the difference with Egon Schiele?
Schiele takes Klimt's fine line, but often emphasizes angular tension, frontality and discomfort. Klimt more readily favors continuity, abandonment and fluid contouring.
Where to see Klimt's drawings?
The Albertina, the Leopold Museum, the Wien Museum and several international collections preserve important ensembles. Works on paper are sensitive to light and are not always exhibited.
