Vinci in Tuscany: birthplace and museum of Leonardo da Vinci
A route between the medieval village, the machines of the Museo Leonardiano and the house of Anchiano, among the olive trees of Montalbano.
Vinci is not a single museum, but a small territory dedicated to Leonardo: three spaces can be visited in the town and the birthplace is in Anchiano, about 3 km higher in the hills.
The Museo Leonardiano occupies the Palazzina Uzielli and the Castello dei Conti Guidi. It presents machine models, digital installations and Leonardo's research on mechanics, flight, water, anatomy and construction. The section Leonardo e la Pittura, Via Roma, brings together full-size, high-definition reproductions of the paintings. Finally, the Casa Natale d'Anchiano recounts the family origin and Tuscan landscape of young Leonardo.

A museum of method, not relics
The Museo Leonardiano uses manuscripts to reconstruct the problems observed by Leonardo: how to lift a load, convert a rotation, measure a distance, use a current or give a mechanical shape to the dream of flying.

A place of memory, not a house that has remained intact
The Anchiano complex is attested as early as 1427 and belonged to the da Vinci family for more than 150 years. Tradition has long identified it as the birthplace of Leonardo, born April 15, 1452 to Ser Piero da Vinci and Caterina.
However, this tradition should not be transformed into absolute domestic certainty. Already in the 19th century, historians discussed the precise location of childbirth: Anchiano or a family house near Vinci Castle. The house was given to the town in 1950, restored, then inaugurated as a museum in 1952.
A biography told by place and image
Three rooms and an adjacent farmhouse
The visit does not seek to artificially furnish a childhood of genius. It is based on stone, the simplicity of rural housing, views of the hills and digital tools that connect Vinci to the manuscripts.
The audiovisual story Leonardo a Vinci: such a racconta genio involves an elderly Leonardo who remembers his origins from Amboise. The application Leonardo Touch allows you to examine paintings and drawings, while an installation brings the landscape drawing dated August 5, 1473 closer to the actual views of Valdinievole.
The house is therefore more convincing when you visit it as a geographical starting point : it reminds us that Leonardo's attention to water, slopes, plants, birds and rock formations was born from a look at a territory.

The museography maintains the connection with Anchiano: sober walls, openings and views of the olive trees avoid transforming the house into a fictional setting.

Walk through Strada Verde
The birthplace is about 3 km away by road. On foot, the Strada Verde connects the town to Anchiano on approximately 2 km of unpaved path. The museum announces around 30 minutes of walking, but a leisurely pace with photographic stops takes more than 40 to 50 minutes.
- Closed shoes recommended: the path may be irregular.
- Bring water, hat and sun protection in spring and summer.
- After the rain, use the road or shuttle if the terrain is slippery.
- The return requires just as much attention: don't calculate the last entry too accurately.
Walking is more than a transfer: olive terraces, slopes, streams and distant openings provide a sensitive context for Leonardo's landscape drawings and natural observations.
Coming from Florence, Pisa or Empoli
By car
From Florence, Pisa or Livorno, take the FI-PI-LI expressway and exit at Empoli. Vinci is then located in the hills of Montalbano. Free parking is indicated around the town; the historic center is partly pedestrianized and ZTL.
By public transport
From Florence, join Empoli by train, then take it line 49 Autolinee Tuscany to Vinci. Check the times on the day of travel: frequencies are lower on Sundays and in the evening.
For Anchiano
The birthplace is accessible by car and has parking near Piazzale Dent. A Vinci -Anchiano and Empoli -Vinci -Anchiano shuttle service is announced; check the traffic schedule before counting on it.
Accessibility
The different buildings do not have the same constraints, notably the panoramic tower and the sloping streets. Visit the official accessibility page or contact the museum for a specific wheelchair, stroller or sensory need.
Booking advice: the cumulative ticket is the easiest if you want to see the town and Anchiano on the same day. Buy online in high season, but keep enough margin between the two sites.

Is Vinci worth a trip from Florence?
Yes, especially if you are interested in machines, Tuscan landscapes or Leonardo's youth. Allow at least half a day; one day allows you to include Anchiano without running.
Are there any original paintings from Leonardo to Vinci?
No. The Leonardo section and painting features full-size, high-definition reproductions. The original paintings are kept in major international museums.
Is the birthplace in the center of Vinci?
No. It is located in Anchiano, about 3 km from the town by road. You can get there by car, by shuttle according to schedule or on foot via the Strada Verde.
Is the cumulative post interesting?
