Pigments and colors at KlimtGold, green, purple and alterations
At Gustav Klimt, color is never a simple color chart. It is born from superimposed pigments, whites which lighten the mixtures, metal sheets which reflect light and surfaces whose appearance evolves over time.

Klimt's palette is not a list of hits
Saying that a green is "viridian" or that a purple is "cobalt" seems simple. When faced with a painting, the reality is more complex: the same tone can combine several pigments, be lightened with zinc white, placed on a white preparation or modified by a varnish and light.
The scientific examinations of Belvedere and the non-invasive study carried out by the National Gallery in Prague now make it possible to go beyond visual impression. They identify chemical elements, molecular signatures, underdrawings and sometimes repeats invisible to the naked eye.
The most detailed results published concern in particular The Virgin (1913) and Water tower (1908 -1909). They shed light on Klimt's practice, but should not be transformed into a universal recipe automatically applicable to each table.
In Klimt, color is substance, light and structure at the same time. Gold reflects light; white builds density; greens and purples organize the rhythm.

Four scientific perspectives
Each method answers a different question. Their crossing makes it possible to approach the material without taking a sample, while maintaining an element of uncertainty on the deep layers.
What elements?
X-ray fluorescence detects zinc, chromium, cobalt, cadmium, arsenic or lead in particular. It guides the identification of mineral pigments.
Which molecules?
Raman spectroscopy characterizes certain colored phases. It helps to distinguish, for example, pigments whose chemical elements are similar.
What is the paint hiding?
Infrared reflectography reveals pencil or chalk lines, corrections and discrepancies between the preparatory drawing and the final state.
What's added?
Ultraviolet fluorescence can differentiate varnishes, touch-ups and more recent interventions, depending on the optical response of the materials.
Essential limit: a non-invasive measurement reads several layers at once and sometimes an old restoration. A detected element therefore does not always equate to a single pigment nor to the original layer located exactly on the surface.
The four families that structure the image
Prague analyzes show a modern and rich palette. Klimt modulates colors by mixing, superpositions and contrasts; it doesn't just apply tones straight from the tube.
Gold and yellow
The golden effect comes from real metals, but also from yellow pigments which visually extend their heat in the painted areas.
- Metals: gold leaf, gold powder, silver and platinum.
- Yellows identified: strontium yellow, barium yellow and cadmium yellow.
- Role: unite the background, vibrate the patterns and create light without atmospheric depth.
Greens
In landscapes as in late figures, greens form dense networks rather than a uniform flat area.
- Identified pigments: viridian, opaque chromium oxide and emerald green.
- Mixtures: cadmium or barium yellows, Prussian blue, sometimes zinc white.
- Role: switch from bright foliage to dark water and build depth by value more than by perspective.
Violets
Klimt purples range from milky mauve, saturated blue-purple, and darkened purple.
- Identified pigments: light cobalt violet and ultramarine violet.
- Possible agreements: alizarin lacquer, blue and white to move temperature and brightness.
- Role: connect flesh, textile, shadow and ornament without producing a naturalistic shadow.
Support colors
Reds, blues, whites and blacks are essential to the power of greens and purples.
- Reds: vermilion, minium, alizarin madder lacquer and probably cadmium red/orange.
- Blues: overseas, cobalt blue and Prussian blue.
- Whites and blacks: omnipresent zinc white, preparation with lead white and barium sulfate, bone black.
What the analyzes really prove
Radka Šefců's study focuses specifically on two paintings preserved in Prague. It makes it possible to associate visual observations with identified materials, without generalizing beyond what the instruments measure.

Greens built by mixing
In vegetation and water, chrome compounds play a major role: transparent viridian and more opaque chromium oxide. Cadmium or barium yolks warm some greens, while zinc blues and whites shift their depth and opacity.
This plurality explains why the surface appears alive: it juxtaposes small chromatic decisions rather than a single green applied everywhere.

Purple as a passage
In this work, mauves and violets connect the ornament, flesh, brown background and light areas. The comparison is visual: it does not replace a material analysis specific to this painting.
The results obtained on The Virgin nevertheless show the means available to Klimt: cobalt violet, ultramarine violet, organic reds and whites capable of producing a very wide range.

Metal between image and frame
In Judith I, gold leaf extends the pattern beyond the garment and brings the painting closer to its frame designed by Georg Klimt. The metallic material does not only describe a jewel: it produces a continuous field where the figure appears both carnal and iconic.
The contrast between the shaped skin, the transparency of the fabric, the dark flat areas and the shine of the gold announces the golden period method. The table shows above all that color in Klimt depends on texture and angle of view as much as on shade.

Gold versus black
In Pallas Athena, metallic reflections and dark tones give the character a compact presence. The metal sometimes seems luminous, sometimes almost brown depending on the reproduction and lighting.

In The Sunflower, leaves, stems and background are distinguished by temperature, value and touch. The yellow of the flower acts as a focus rather than an isolated color.

A color that depends on shine
The armor, helmet and bottom form a dense range. The perceived value changes with reflection: it is already a painting that requires distinguishing local color and surface behavior.

The garden as a mosaic
The small juxtaposed touches make each leaf distinct without breaking the unity of the plant carpet. Green becomes architecture, and not a simple botanical imitation.

The trap of reconstituted colors
Faculty paintings were destroyed in 1945. The colorful images circulating today do not necessarily accurately convey the original material state. Belvedere's recent digital recolorizations are explicitly presented as approximations assisted by artificial intelligence.
For these lost works, historical testimonies - notably the description of Medicine like hot, red and purple - must be crossed with the photographs, without passing off a reconstruction as a measure.
What can change - and what remains to be proven
A work ages through interaction between pigments, binder, light, humidity, varnish, restorations and support. Known mechanisms help to ask the right questions, but do not alone prove that a precise Klimt picture is altered today.
Metals and shine
Gold is chemically stable and particularly durable platinum. Silver can darken in response to the environment. Varnish, dust and lighting also strongly modify the perceived shine.
Red lacquers
Organic dyes may fade under the effect of light. Conservation studies show that relative humidity can accelerate the alteration of certain alizarin lacquers; This is a general risk, not an automatic diagnosis for every Klimt.
Emerald green
This arsenical pigment can react chemically. Its presence identified in The Virgin reports a material to monitor, but visible condition depends on mixing, layers and storage conditions.
Zinc soaps
Zinc compounds were detected in the two works studied in Prague. They can come from reactions between oil and zinc ions or from manufacturing additives. Elsewhere, these soaps are associated with cracking or delamination, without this implying this damage in the tables examined here.
Varnishes and touch-ups
A coat of varnish can yellow or change saturation. UV helps distinguish interventions. Cleaning or lightening a varnish is a conservation decision, never a simple aesthetic correction.
Screens and reproductions
A photo does not show absolute color. White balance, screen profile, grazing light and shooting angle mainly transform metals and violets. Two faithful reproductions may therefore seem different.
The right reflex: separate observation, analysis and hypothesis
"This area appears browner" is an observation. "It contains chromium" is an analytical result. "It was once greener" is a hypothesis that requires additional data: stratigraphy, imaging, archives, comparison with protected areas and conservation history.

Was Klimt using real gold leaf?
Yes. Belvedere research confirms the use of real gold leaf, but also silver, platinum, gold dust and oil-bound gold powder. The surfaces could then be painted or regilded.
What green pigments did Klimt use?
In The Virgin and Water tower, the analyzes notably identified viridian, opaque chromium oxide and emerald green. Zinc yellows, blues and whites also participate in green mixtures.
What pigment does Klimt violets give?
There is no single answer. The study of The Virgin identified cobalt violet and purple ultramarine. Other tones may result from blending with blues, red and white lacquers.
Are the current colors exactly those of 1900?
Not necessarily. Light, varnish, chemical reactions, restorations and observation conditions can change appearance. To assert an accurate transformation requires comparative examinations and a conservation history.
Why do Klimt reproductions differ so much?
Metals react to angle and light, while purples are difficult to reproduce. Photography, white balance, printing and screen therefore greatly change perception without the work itself having changed.
Are recolorizations of destroyed works reliable?
They are useful for proposing a visual hypothesis, but do not constitute a certain restitution. Belvedere presents his recolorizations of Faculty paintings as approximations assisted by artificial intelligence.
