Most visited museums in the world: understanding the numbers
A museum is not an attraction that you measure at a glance. The rankings change depending on the year, the definition chosen and the scope counted.
Here are recent landmarks, dated and sourced to locate the Louvre, the Vatican Museums, the major institutions of London, New York and Asia - then prepare a visit which really leaves time for the works.

"Most visited" is not a perfectly stable category
The lists are attractive because they give the impression of a simple order. However, comparing museums requires answering several questions. Is there a single establishment or network of sites? Do we include a historic palace, an archaeological monument, a science museum, a garden or just the exhibition halls? Are we using a historic palace, an archaeological monument, a science museum, a garden or just the exhibition halls? Are we using the calendar year, the financial year or an estimate collected by an international survey?
The report TEA Global Experience Index offers a coherent global photograph for a given year. Museums, for their part, publish their own data, often more detailed but based on different calendars. The Louvre thus communicates on the calendar year 2024; the British Museum for the financial year ending March 31, 2025; the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the financial year ending June 30, 2025; the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the financial year ending March 31, 2025; the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the financial year ending June 30, 2025; the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the financial year ending March 31, 2025; the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the financial year ending June
These numbers are all legitimate, but they should not be aligned as if they measured exactly the same thing. The most reliable approach is therefore to give the period, scope and source to each number, then talk about big benchmarks rather than an eternal podium.
Setting the year
A 2024 ranking should not mix 2023, 2025 data or staggered financial years without warning.
Define the site
A building, several branches or a vast heritage area can produce very different totals.
Identify the source
Annual report, official press release and sectoral inquiry do not have the same protocol or the same level of detail.
Recent benchmarks
Comparable numbers only if you keep their label
The table below does not claim to produce a hybrid classification. On the contrary, it shows why each piece of data must remain attached to its period and its scope. The values are rounded for ease of reading.
| Marker | Attendance published | Period and scope | Careful reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Louvre | 8.7 million | Calendar year 2024, Louvre Museum | Official figure; attendance close to 8.9 million in 2023 despite the Olympic context. |
| Vatican Museums | About 6.8 million | Calendar year 2024, TEA benchmark | A very dense museum complex; the extension of schedules also responds to flow issues. |
| British Museum | 6.5 million | Fiscal year 2024/25, a London site | The annual report specifies that these are physical visits, excluding virtual visits. |
| Metropolitan Museum of Art | More than 5.7 million | Fiscal Year 2025, Met Fifth Avenue and Met Cloisters | The total adds two sites; the museum announces an increase of 5% over one year. |
| Top 20 TEA | 145.9 million | Calendar year 2024, twenty global institutions | Overall dynamic indicator, depending on the definition of the establishments selected. |

The Louvre: the power of a museum and a monument

Why the Louvre remains a special case
Its attendance is due to a rarely equaled combination: a former royal palace, a central location, a collection covering several millennia and some images that have become universal. There Mona Lisa, there Victory of Samothrace and there Venus de Milo act as poles of attraction, but the museum is not reduced to these three meetings.
In 2024,7% of individual visitors came from abroad and 66% discovered the museum for the first time, according to the Louvre. These data explain the challenge: welcoming a global audience, often eager to see icons, without transforming the rooms into a simple photographic validation itinerary.
A fruitful visit begins with a choice. Two departments, a wing or a handful of works offer more than an exhaustive crossing. The quieter rooms allow you to observe the frames, formats, re-compositions and changes in material which disappear in the busiest spaces.
Rome · London · New York · Asia
A world geography, several museum models
Attendance depends as much on the collection as on tourism, free admission, reception capacity, schedules and institutional definition. The contrasts between Vatican, London, New York and Asia are therefore more instructive than a simple rank.

From the imposed route to the museum-continent
At the Vatican Museums, the visitor follows a vast chain of collections which often culminates with the Sistine Chapel. The entry measures applied since January 2024 - extended hours, groups limited to twenty people and nominative ticketing - show that flow management is now part of cultural and conservation policy.
The British Museum is based on another model: free general access, an encyclopedic collection and the Great Court playing the role of an interior square. Its 2024/25 report includes 6.5 million physical visits. This success also fuels essential debates on the provenance, colonial history of the collections and requests for restitution; attendance should not erase these questions.
In New York, the Met associates the monumental site of Fifth Avenue with the Cloisters, dedicated to medieval art. Its total of more than 5.7 million for the 2025 financial year adds these two experiences. In Asia, large national institutions and museums of heritage sites host considerable volumes: their weight reminds us that a panorama limited to Western capitals has become insufficient.
From firm to global network
Some dates to understand the making of great museums
The busy institutions were not born from the same project. Some come from royal collections, others from a national ambition, a parliamentary act, a private foundation or an architectural reinvention.
Foundation of the British Museum
An act of Parliament creates a public institution from collections brought together, in particular, by Hans Sloane. The museum opened to the public in 1759.
Opening of the Central Museum of Arts
At the Louvre, the former royal palace became a public museum during the French Revolution. The institution then transformed with regimes and acquisitions.
Birth of the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Met was founded in New York with the ambition of creating a major art museum serving the city; its Fifth Avenue building opened in 1880.
A station becomes the Musée d'Orsay
The reconversion of the Orsay station shows how an existing monument can become the setting for a clearly defined artistic period, from 1848 to 1914.
Pyramid changes entrance to Louvre
IM Pei's project reorganizes the reception and gives the museum an immediately recognizable contemporary sign, which has become inseparable from its global image.
Transform a crowd into a look
How to visit a busy museum without being subjected to its size
The best strategy isn't to run faster. It involves voluntarily reducing the schedule, booking when possible, and conserving energy to watch. A two-hour tour built around a specific thread can be richer than a day spent walking through rooms.
Choose a thread
An artist, a period, a color, a department or five works are enough to give coherence. The rest becomes a discovery, not an obligation.
Book and check
Check the official website the day before: opening hours, access, closed rooms and temporary exhibitions change faster than a printed guide.
Start differently
If the plan allows it, start far from the most requested icon. A calm first quarter of an hour refines the look before dense areas.
Watch in sequences
Alternate close observation, retreat and reading of the cartel. Photographing after looking avoids replacing the work with its screen.
Agree to give up
A closed or saturated room does not cancel the visit. Note the work for later and explore a less busy section.
End with a trace
Write three titles or three sensations when you leave. This little personal memory is better than an entire list of rooms visited.
A large museum becomes readable when you stop wanting to conquer it.
The right route is not the longest: it is the one that still leaves a work in memory the next day. From the museum to the home
Create an interior inspired by collections, without imitating a gallery

Starting from the effect of the work, not the prestige of the museum
A reproduction does not need to transform the living room into an exhibition hall. It must first respond to the scale of the wall, the available light and the desired atmosphere. A dark and concentrated work benefits from breathing on a light wall; a luminous composition can support natural materials and a soft palette.
The format matters as much as the subject. Above a sofa, a width corresponding to approximately two-thirds of the furniture creates a stable relationship. In an entrance, a vertical portrait immediately catches the eye. In a bedroom, a work with moderate contrasts avoids too aggressive a presence.
Light the canvas obliquely and gently, without direct sunlight. The frame can recall the era without caricaturing it: dark wood for Vermeer, sober frame for Van Gogh, light or off-white wood for Monet. Finally, leave space around the image; visual breathing is one of the most useful lessons in museums.
Four works, four institutions
Extend the visit with a hand-painted reproduction
These four active products from the store make it possible to connect a work to a specific location: MoMA, Marmottan Monet museum, Mauritshuis and Musée d'Orsay. Reproduction does not replace the original; it extends the attention paid to its composition, its light and its rhythm.

Starry Night
Swirling sky, vertical cypress and contrast between celestial movement and silent village.

Print, rising sun
A port atmosphere built by blue transitions and orange accent.

The Girl with a Pearl Earring
A turned face, a dark background and a few reflections which concentrate all the presence.

The Magpie
Snow becomes a study of light where colored shadows structure silence.
The museum as the gateway to the store
Eight museum collections to explore works differently
A museum does not only bring together famous artists: it tells a story of taste, acquisitions, schools and territories. The store's collections take up this institutional logic. They allow you to start from a place truly associated with the works - the Louvre, Orsay, the Met or the MoMA - then to compare paintings that you would not always think of bringing together.
It is particularly useful after a visit, to find a work observed in the room, or before a trip, to build a visual journey. The quantities indicated below correspond to the active catalog verified on July 14, 2026 and may change as new reproductions join the store.
Choose the institution visited or dreamed of: each page brings together reproductions linked to its collections.
Look at how the same collection brings together periods, formats, genres and pictorial traditions.
Then move on to the artist, subject or palette to find a work consistent with your interior.

Eight precise answers
Frequently asked questions about the most visited museums
What is the most visited museum in the world?
The answer depends on the definition chosen. Among the major art museums compared internationally, the Louvre remains a major landmark with 8.7 million visitors in 2024. Museums of Asian heritage sites can announce higher volumes; it is therefore always necessary to check the scope of the classification.
Why do museum rankings differ?
They do not always retain the same categories, years or sites. Some include science museums, archaeological monuments or palaces; others are limited to art museums. Financial years may also be offset from the calendar year.
Do the numbers have unique visitors?
Generally no. They count visits or entries. The same person can be registered several times if they return. Institutional reports sometimes specify excluded categories, such as virtual tours.
Has the Louvre regained its pre-2020 attendance?
In 2024, the Louvre welcomed 8.7 million visitors, compared to 8.9 million in 2023. The museum indicates that it remains around nine million annually, but historical comparisons must take into account closures, gauges and reception policies.
When is the best time to visit a major museum?
There is no universal schedule. Reserve a slot available on the official website, check the nights and arrive with a limited route. The first hours and some end of the day are often more comfortable, with no absolute guarantee.
How many works can you really watch in two hours?
A dozen carefully observed works already constitutes a rich visit. Prepare three priorities, add a few discoveries and plan breaks. The quality of the look matters more than the number of rooms visited.
Should you see the Mona Lisa on a first visit to the Louvre?
It's a choice, not an obligation. If it matters to you, integrate it into a short course and accept a dense room. Otherwise, the Louvre offers countless alternatives allowing a calmer encounter with painting, sculpture or decorative arts.
How to choose a museum-inspired reproduction?
First choose a work that really holds you back, then adapt the format to the wall, the palette to the room and the framing to the desired effect. Check the product sheet, image, dimensions and technique before ordering.
