One hundred works to tell the story of the painted wall

When painting becomes a place

A mural is an image designed for a wall, vault, dome or ceiling and designed with the architecture that receives it. Its size is not enough to define it: a very large easel painting remains a painting, while a more modest scene can be a mural if its format, framing and technique meet a specific location.

A mural doesn't just occupy a surface: it regulates how to enter, look up, move around and share an image.

Datearound 1915 -1926Collectionorangery Museum, Paris

"Les Nymphéas: Matin" by Claude Monet, dated around 1915 -1926. The last chapter places the wall at the heart of modernity: total decor, political manifesto, immersive panorama, public painting and experimental surface coexist there. The monumental figures are not simply enlarged: gestures, contrasts and lines of force are calculated to remain readable from a real distance. The work is preserved or installed at Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris; this location counts as much as its iconography, because a mural regulates the circulation, distance and light of the place.

What the ranking reveals

One hundred murals, three changes of scale

The painted wall spans the centuries because it depends neither on a single subject nor on a single technique. He can protect a tomb, celebrate a city, ordain a chapel, decorate a palace or wear a political manifesto.

01

Architecture is a co-author

Door, vault, dome, window and real point of view decide the visible form and progression of the story.

02

The body gives the measure

The size of the figures and their height transform the spectator into a participant, witness, faithful, citizen or passerby.

03

The support keeps the memory

Coating, joints, cracks, transfers and restorations tell the story of the material survival of an image linked to a building.

A world history of the painted wall

Five benchmarks to follow your transformation

1650 BC J.-C.Akrotiri

The Spring Fresco envelops a room in a continuous landscape where rocks and swallows almost abolish the wall.

around 1305Giotto

The Scrovegni Chapel organizes the gaze into registers, scenes and emotional correspondences of a new coherence.

1511Raphael

The School of Athens brings together painted architecture, real space and the history of thought in an image that has become universal.

1850The public decor

Delacroix, Ingres, Flandrin and Puvis de Chavannes reinvent wall control for churches, palaces, libraries and museums.

1930Modern muralism

Rivera and Orozco gave the wall a political, social and educational role at the city and nation level.

Mural in depth

What's a mural?

A mural is an image designed for a wall, vault, dome or ceiling and designed with the architecture that receives it. Its size is not enough to define it: a very large easel painting remains a painting, while a more modest scene can be a mural if its format, framing and technique meet a specific location.

Fresco is just one technique among others. In buon fresco, pigments penetrate the still wet coating; dry painting occurs on an already prepared wall. Oil, tempera, encaustic and mounted canvas allow other color and recovery effects. The classification brings together these techniques without confusing them.

Architecture is a co-author. A window can separate two episodes, a dome imposes an ascending vision, a long wall transforms the reading into a journey and a chapel distributes the scenes according to the entrance, the altar and the light. The rectangular reproduction restores the image, but never entirely the situation of the body facing the decor.

Mural painting is also political and social. Grave, palace, church, town hall, university, library or museum define an audience, a commission and a function. Lorenzetti addresses his government to a city; Rivera and Orozco transform the modern wall into a collective narrative; Puvis and Sargent seek public memory for institutions.

Conservation poses particular problems. A panel can travel; a wall depends on its building. Humidity, earthquakes, war, whitewash, smoke, restoration and transfer modify the surface. Some works are still in situ, others have been detached and installed at the museum; the classification indicates their place of conservation or their original location.

Four reading keys

How to look at a mural

Location, technique, scale and route allow us to find what an isolated reproduction does not immediately show.

Location

Find architecture

Identify the function of the room, sanctuary, tomb or palace and the openings that structure the decor.

Technique

Read the surface

Fresco on fresh coating, dry painting, oil or masking produce neither the same color nor the same aging.

Scale

Imagine the body facing the wall

A head located ten meters high must remain expressive; a panoramic frieze is discovered by movement.

Cycle

Connect the scenes

Reading order, repetitions, axes and gestures often cross several walls or several registers.

Frequently asked questions

Wall painting without false walls

The essential benchmarks for understanding the techniques chosen, the exclusions and the link between monumental work and reproduction.

Is a mural always a fresco?

No. The fresco is painted on fresh coating. A mural can also be executed dry, in oil, tempera, encaustic or on a mounted canvas designed for architecture.

Why are mosaics not included?

Because they construct the image with tesserae rather than with a pictorial layer. Their material history and conservation criteria would justify separate classification.

How was the ranking established?

The first twenty places combine international fame, influence and power of the link between image and architecture. The following chapters favor a coherent historical and geographical progression.

Why are several scenes from the Sistine Chapel featured?

Certain scenes have acquired exceptional autonomy in art history. They are only retained separately if their fame and formal contribution justify a distinct entry; the small fragments and repetitions have been discarded.

Are Asian works included?

No. The requested scope excludes Asia; the selection covers Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Are all the images different?

Yes.

Why were twenty products created?

The major ancient, medieval and Mesoamerican milestones as well as five decorations by Goya and Orozco were missing from the catalog. All are anonymous or due to artists who died before 1956; their free image and their source were checked before creation.

Does the button open the correct reproduction?

Yes. Eighty cards were reused and twenty created, without images or repeated products.

The classification ends, the wall remains open

One hundred murals, a history of shared space

From the Egyptian tomb to the Baroque dome, from the Minoan palace to the Sienese town hall, from the Renaissance chapel to Mexican muralism, these hundred works show that the painted wall is one of the most enduring forms of the collective image. He changes technique, subject and sponsor, but retains the same ambition: to transform a building into an experience.
