The history of the Alte Nationalgalerie begins in 1861 when the banker Joachim Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener bequeathed two hundred and sixty-two works to the Prussian state, requesting the creation of a national gallery. The building, inspired by a sketch by King Frederick William IV and designed by Friedrich August Stüler then created by Johann Heinrich Strack, was built from 1867 to 1876. It officially opened on March 22, 1876 on Museum Island. The collection covers the period between the French Revolution and the First World War: neoclassicism, romanticism, Biedermeier, realism, impressionism and Secessions. Caspar David Friedrich, Schinkel, Menzel, Liebermann, Courbet and the french impressionists interact there. Around eighteen hundred paintings and fifteen hundred sculptures make up the collection. Monet, Cézanne, Renoir and Delacroix show here modern landscape, still life, figure and romantic color. The "Alte Nationalgalerie" selection notably compares Les maison d'Argenteuil - Claude Monet and Flowers in a Pot of Ginger and Fruit - Paul Cézanne. His reading favors composition.
In Berlin, the Alte Nationalgalerie preserves the 19th century as an era of fruitful tensions between ideals, social observation, interior landscape and modernity of color.
