The Austrian Gallery Belvedere presents Austrian art in an international context and preserves the largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt.

Housed in the baroque palaces of Belvedere, the museum has its origins in the Modern Gallery opened in 1903 in the lower Belvedere. Its founding mission consists of presenting Austrian art in an international context. In 1908, the imperial ministry acquired The Kiss by Gustav Klimt; in 1912, the institution became the Osterreichische Staatsgalerie. Today the route covers the Middle Ages, Austrian Baroque, Biedermeier, Vienna around 1900 and modern art.
