around 1410 -1475 · Flemish primitives and painting of Louvain
Dirk - or Dieric - Bouts was probably born in the Northern Netherlands around 1410, but his documented career took place mainly in Louvain, where his name appeared in the archives from 1448. The art of Rogier van der Weyden marked his training: elongated figures, collected faces and devotional narration. Bouts, however, develops his own, less demonstrative sensitivity, based on silence, distance and the rational organization of space. In The Last Supper of the Saint-Pierre collegiate church, commissioned in 1464, architecture subjects the scene to a coherent perspective while the gestures retained give the meal a contemplative intensity. In The Last Supper of the Saint-Pierre collegiate church, commissioned in 1464, architecture subjects the scene to a coherent perspective while the gestures retained give the meal a contemplative intensity. Having become the official painter of Louvain, he also commissioned panels of Emperor Otto III's Justice for City Hall. His workshop, in which his sons Dieric the Younger and Albrecht participated, produced altarpieces, virgins, portraits and devotional images. Bouts died in 1475, leaving several projects unfinished and a decisive legacy for the painting of the ancient Netherlands. The "Dirk Bouts" selection notably compares The Justice of Emperor Otto III - the beheading of the innocent and The Justice of Emperor Otto III - the test of fire. His reading favors movement.
Bouts builds emotion through calm: perspective, light and suspended gestures transform the story into contemplation.
