Domenico Zampieri, nicknamed Domenichino because of his small size, was born in Bologna in 1581. Trained with Denis Calvaert then Ludovico Carracci, he joined Rome around 1602 and worked in Annibale Carracci's entourage at the Farnese Palace. His first commissions reveal an ideal based on Raphael, Antiquity and the Bolognese reform: emotions must be understandable, gestures precise and composition clear. Domenichino also plays a major role in the invention of classical landscape: trees, river, city and mountains form an ordered world where the sacred or mythological story retains a measured place. After several stays between Rome and Bologna, he left for Naples in 1631 to decorate the chapel of the Treasury of San Gennaro. He died there in 1641, leaving a profound influence on Poussin, Claude Lorrain and academic painting.
