Transparent color, precious details, atmospheric landscapes and meditative softness make Gerard David the last grand master of Bruges at the turn of the Renaissance.

Gerard David was probably born in Oudewater around 1460 and appeared in Bruges in 1484, when he became master of the guild of Saint Luke. The city then preserves the heritage of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hans Memling: precision of oil, attention to objects and spiritual presence of detail. David assimilates this tradition while developing a more unified color and landscapes of new depth. Briefly imprisoned in Bruges following a financial conflict, he died in 1523 and is buried in the Notre-Dame church. Long less famous than the founders of the 15th century, David is today recognized for his technical mastery, his peaceful mysticism and the growing place he gives to landscape.
