Gerard David was probably born in Oudewater around 1460 and appeared in Bruges in 1484, when he became master of the guild of Saint Luke. The city then preserves the heritage of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hans Memling: precision of oil, attention to objects and spiritual presence of detail. David assimilates this tradition while developing a more unified color and landscapes of new depth. After Memling's death, he became the principal painter of Bruges and received commissions from brotherhoods, churches, merchants and magistrates. After Memling's death, he became the principal painter of Bruges and received commissions from brotherhoods, churches, merchants and magistrates. After Memling's death, he became the principal painter of Bruges and received commissions from brotherhoods, churches, merchants and magistrates. The diptych of Justice of Cambyses, intended for the council room of the town hall, shows the arrest and then the torture from Judge Sisamnes. Architecture, costumes and expressions give the story a disturbing accuracy; the image warns magistrates of the consequences of corruption. In contrast, Virgin Between Virgins, Virgin and Child and the numerous versions of Rest During the Flight into Egypt establish a calm devotion in continuous gardens or landscapes. The transition from near to far, greens, blues and atmospheric light transform nature into a meditative space. David works with an active workshop that produces variations and replicas for an international market. His contacts with Antwerp and perhaps Italy gradually expanded the types of figures and spatial organization, without breaking with Bruges tradition. Briefly imprisoned in Bruges following a financial conflict, he died in 1523 and is buried in the Notre-Dame church. Long less famous than the founders of the 15th century, David is today recognized for his technical mastery, his peaceful mysticism and the growing place he gives to landscape. The "Gerard David" selection notably compares the Judgment of Cambyses and the Arrest of Sisamnes. His reading favors drawing.
Gerard David makes the landscape a space for meditation: each leaf, distant blue and luminous reflection extends the silence of the sacred scene.
