Los Angeles · Opened in 1997 · Art, architecture, research and conservation
The Getty Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997 after nearly fifteen years of design. Richard Meier organizes a campus of travertine, glass, squares and pavilions on the hill; Robert Irwin designs the Central Garden as a living work. The site brings together the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Research Institute, the Conservation Institute and the Getty Foundation. The collection of paintings covers more than six centuries, from around 1250 to 1920. Monet made the facade vibrate there from Rouen, Van Gogh transforms irises into a field of color, Renoir captures a walk under the trees and Turner envelops Rome in historical light. The "Getty Center" selection notably features Rouen Cathedral, the Portal, Morning Effect - Claude Monet and Iris - Vincent van Gogh. His reading favors color.
At the Getty Center, California light isn't just a setting: it regulates architecture, illuminates paintings, and connects museum, garden, research, and city.
