Since 1883 · Indianapolis, world art, gardens and landscape
The Indianapolis Museum of Art was founded in 1883 by the Art Association of Indianapolis, initially around exhibitions and artistic education for the city. After several establishments, the museum moved to the old one in 1970 lilly family estate. It now forms the artistic heart of Newfields, a campus where collections, Lilly House, gardens, nature and contemporary outdoor art are thought of together. The permanent collection exceeds forty-one a thousand works. It covers the arts of Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, painting, sculpture, decorative arts, textiles, photography and design. This diversity allows us to study ancient traditions as well than the transformations of modernity. The reproductions selected follow several ways of inhabiting the landscape and the portrait. Monet transforms San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice into luminous and aquatic architecture. The Self-Portrait of Rembrandt makes the face a place of interior examination. Van Gogh builds the Landscape in Saint-Rémy with a tense touch that animates the ground, trees and reliefs. Pissarro finally organizes his Landscape according to a calmer observation of the relationships between paths, fields and atmosphere. Presented in a museum itself surrounded by gardens, these works remind us that the painted landscape is never a simple view: it is an experience of light, memory and movement. The selection " Indianapolis Museum of Art notably compares the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, in Venice and Self-portrait. His reading favors drawing.
At Newfields, the work symbolically leaves the walls of the museum: painting, architecture and landscape participate in the same experience of the gaze.
