J. Paul Getty began actively acquiring works in the 1930s and opened his first public gallery in his Malibu home in 1954. The rise of its antiquities led to the construction of a museum inspired by the Villa des Herculaneum Papyrus, inaugurated in 1974. The Getty Villa today presents the arts of Greece, Rome and Etruria. After the collector's death in 1976, the museum developed new departments and opened the Getty Center in 1997 on the heights of Los Angeles. Designed by Richard Meier, the campus brings together galleries, gardens, conservation, education and research. The collections cover in particular illuminated manuscripts, European paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and decorative arts.
