Opened in August 1964 near Yamagata Castle Park, the museum is developing a collection where local artistic history meets European modernity. An annex was added in 1968, the year Kichiro Hasegawa offered a hundred sixty-three works; the current main building opened in 1985. The collection preserves Japanese painting, modern sculpture and an important French ensemble. Since 1991, the Yoshino Gypsum collection, deposited and regularly enriched, brings together more than a hundred works around Millet, Pissarro, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Chagall, Kandinsky and Picasso. This continuity allows us to follow Barbizon's transition to impressionism and then to the avant-gardes. The four selected works favor Monet and Renoir: floating surface of the water lilies, depth of the undergrowth, architecture of Vernon and intimate presence of a figure with a dog. The "Yamagata Art Museum" selection notably compares Water lilies - Claude Monet and Undergrowth in the forest of Saint-Germain - Claude Monet. His reading favors space.
In Yamagata, modern French painting is not an imported island: it dialogues with Japanese collections, local donors and a long culture of landscape.
