Tokyo · Opened in 1959 · Matsukata and Western Art Collection
The National Museum of Western Art was created in 1959 to house the collection brought together in Europe by the Japanese industrialist Kôjiro Matsukata. Part of the works remaining in France after the Second World War are returned by the French government as a symbol of rapprochement between the two countries. Three hundred and seventy pieces form the core of the new museum, inaugurated in Ueno Park. Le Corbusier designed the main building according to the principle of museum of unlimited growth, assisted in Japan by Kunio Maekawa, Junzo Sakakura and Takamasa Yoshizaka. In 2016, the building joined the world heritage with the architectural works of Le Corbusier. Paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints cover from the 14th century to modern times, with major ensembles of Rodin and French painting. Monet, Delacroix and Van Gogh connect landscape, spirituality and color in the selection. The selection "National Museum of western Art notably compares Water Lilies - Claude Monet and The Education of the Virgin - Eugène Delacroix. His reading favors space.
In Tokyo, the Matsukata collection and Le Corbusier's architecture embody a lasting dialogue between Japan, France and Western art history.
