Vincent van Gogh · 1889 · Arles or Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Roses, F580Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A rose bush covered with white and pale pink flowers unfolds in a green garden: on this small canvas, Van Gogh circulates the gaze with curved touches which announce the rhythm of his landscapes of Saint-Rémy.

Look at the work

A flowering rose bush observed very closely

The branches start from the bottom of the composition and form a dense bush in the center. The roses appear in small touches of cream, pink and salmon, surrounded by blue-green leaves and almost black areas of shade.

On the left, a narrow path crosses the grass and disappears under the foliage. On the right, long, pointed tufts close the foreground. The absence of horizon transforms the garden into a continuous surface of greens.

The notice from the National Museum of Western Art dates the work to 1889 and leaves open its precise location: the last days in Arles or the start of the stay in Saint-Rémy. Its historical catalog also designates it as a rose bush in bloom.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The number P.1959-0193, the format of 33 × 41.3 cm and the references F580/JH1679 make it possible to identify this small canvas from the Matsukata collection.

01

Flowers without fixed contours

Each rose is born from a few thick, clear touches. The petals remain mixed with the movement of leaves and grass.

02

An almost depthless view

Van Gogh removes the sky and frames the bush closely. The path is the only element that makes you look back.

03

Very varied greens

Olive green, emerald, blue green and yellow make up the garden, while pale roses create resting points.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Japanese collection sheet highlights in this work the development of the undulating touches which will characterize the Saint-Rémy period.

Dating

A location discussed

The museum remembers 1889 and indicates that the canvas could have been painted at the end of the Arlesian stay or at the beginning of the Saint-Rémy period.

Collection

Matsukata Collection

The work belongs to the ensemble brought together by Kôjiro Matsukata and bears the number P.1959-0193.

Format

A small canvas

With 33 × 41.3 cm, Roses focuses its effect on the material of the flowers and the tight network of vegetation.

  • Blue-green leaves in the center
  • The narrow path on the left
  • The pointed tufts of the foreground
  • The blue-black shadows under the flowers
