How to recognize a primitivist painting?
Primitivism is not a school organized around a single manifesto. It designates several modern researches which move away from academic naturalism to find a more synthetic, symbolic and immediate image.
Simplified shapes
The volumes are reduced to legible silhouettes, often delimited by clear contours.
Asserted colors
Flat areas and contrasts take precedence over realistic gradients and descriptive light.
Liberated perspective
Space can become frontal, flattened, or intentionally disproportionate to reinforce expression.
Symbols and stories
Animals, figures, landscapes and objects carry an interior, spiritual or mythical dimension.
A historical term to contextualize
The word "primitivism" today
In Western art history, the term describes modern artists' interest in popular, medieval, Oceanian, African, or non-European arts that they perceived as more direct. This category is today studied critically, because it can reflect a colonial outlook and mask the diversity of the cultures concerned.
This page therefore uses "primitivism" as a historical category of modernity, without qualifying people or their arts as "primitive".
Situate the style
Post-impressionism, primitivism or expressionism?
These currents intersect around color and simplification, but they do not pursue exactly the same intentions.
Post-impressionism
Color and structure move away from visual impression to construct an individual language.

Frequently asked questions
Before ordering
The essential answers on the term, the artists, the technique and the creation of your reproduction.
Are the paintings printed?
No. Each reproduction is hand painted in oil on canvas.
What does "primitivism" mean in art history?
The term refers to modern research based on simplification, symbol and interest in popular, archaic or non-European arts. This is a historical category that has now been critically analyzed.
What is the difference between naive art and primitivism?
Naive art generally designates a self-taught or deliberately simple practice, as with Henri Rousseau. Primitivism is broader and also concerns trained artists who consciously seek a synthetic or archaic expression.
