Look at the work

The wind undulates a field almost without detail

The field occupies almost the lower half and unfolds like a wide colored band. The tree line remains low, except for the central poplar which almost reaches the top of the sky. This contrast gives a strong vertical to an otherwise very horizontal composition.

The flowers are suggested by a multitude of touches of red, coral, pink and mauve placed on greens. The sky combines several blues with pale pink clouds; on the horizon, the trees mix green, ultramarine and purple in order to remain distinct without outline.

In W1255, Monet renounces botanical detail to paint the collective movement of the field, like a colored surface pushed by the wind.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A field treated as a moving surface

The Hermitage notice emphasizes the mass of flowers swept sideways. The keys do not describe each poppy: their common direction makes the ripple of the wind felt.

02

Poplar as a single axis

The central tree, tall and thin, cuts the sky and prevents the composition from being reduced to three horizontal bands. Its irregular silhouette must remain light despite its structural role.

03

A painting from the Morozov collection

Before entering the Hermitage in 1948, the work belonged to Ivan Morozov and then to the State Museum of New Western Art. Its current inventory is ʻonds-9004.

Composition01

A depth without path or character

The retreat comes from the change in scale of the keys, the strip of trees and the blue relief on the right. No path leads the eye; color alone organizes space.

Color02

A distributed red, never continuous

Poppies appear between greens, blues and yellows. These intervals must be maintained so that the field breathes and the reds remain luminous.

Matter03

A different material between sky and meadow

The sky receives wider and more melted passages; the field is built by small, numerous touches. This opposition reflects the calm air above moving vegetation.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Hermitage Museum documents Poppy Field, oil on canvas circa 1890, 60.5 × 92 cm, inventory ʻonds-9004 and Wildenstein 1255.

Location01

The fields around Giverny

After settling in Giverny, Monet regularly observed the crops located around his house. Poppies give it a pattern where the color changes with the wind and distance.

Date02

Around 1890

The Hermitage retains an approximate dating around 1890. The catalog raisonné classifies the canvas under the number W1255, in a group of fields painted during this period.

Conservation03

General Staff Building, room 403

The canvas is presented in the collections of French painting from the 19th and 20th centuries of the Hermitage Museum, in the General Staff building.
