A bird's eye view of Allée des Alyscamps

Three massive trees occupy the foreground and almost cut the stage into panels. Behind them, the two figures on the left and the young woman dressed in red appear among the benches and tombs.

No sky is visible. The orange ground rises to the upper edge, while the light green of the left area and blue trunks create depth in flat areas rather than in classic perspective.

The Kroeller-Müller Museum dates the painting from around November 1, 1888 and highlights the unusually high viewpoint, Japanese framing and fading of the once purple trunks.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The KM 108.668 version measures 72.8 × 91.9 cm and corresponds to F486/JH1620. It can be recognized by its three central trees and its absence of horizon.

The viewer dominates the figures and furniture of the alley. This choice brings the plans together and gives the ground an exceptional presence.

Trunks whose color has changed

The museum explains that they were originally purple. The gradual disappearance of the red pigment made them appear blue.

The couple on the left is summed up by a few expressive lines, while the red woman in the background punctuates the aisle with a bright accent.
