Look at the work

A nearby pine tree reveals, in contrast, the golden city and the distant mountains

The trunk of the pine rises in the left third and its foliage extends towards the center, without masking Antibes. The city forms a light strip beyond the bay; its twin towers and ramparts emerge in small touches of yellow, pink and blue.

The foreground mixes green, purple, ocher and red in tight vegetation. The water changes from turquoise to pale blue, then the mountains dissolve into cold roses. Pine provides the only big dark accent and stabilizes the whole.

Monet reduces the buildings to a luminous rhythm: Antibes remains recognizable, but the true architecture of the painting rests on the pine, the bay and the successive layers of atmosphere.
