Les Arènes d'Arles, par Vincent van Gogh

Spectators in the Arles arenas, F548Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The crowds of Arles arenas invade almost the entire setting: faces, hats and clothes pile up around a thin yellow opening on the track.

Look at the work

The show is in the stands

Van Gogh describes neither bull nor bullfighter in the center of the arena. He turns his gaze towards the spectators, seen very closely in the foreground then condensed into a dark mass in the stands. The curve of architecture only appears in fragments.

Close figures are individualized by a few profiles, hairstyles and flat areas of color. Higher up, people become simple touches of black, blue, red or yellow. A large ocher area corresponding to the track cuts through the crowd and gives air to this very dense composition.

The work is less a report on bullfighting than a study of the crowd: Van Gogh transforms the noise of the place into the rhythm of colorful shapes.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The reproduction must preserve the difference between the figures in the foreground and the almost abstract crowd in the stands.

01

A crowd without a center

The eyes go in several directions and no figure dominates. This dispersion makes us feel the collective agitation.

02

The curve of the stands

The balustrade and the ocher track form large arches which contain the silhouettes and recall the elliptical shape of the amphitheater.

03

Faces in touches

A few lines are enough to suggest a nose, a hat or a nape. Local colors replace traditional modeling.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F548/JH1653 is the scene from December 1888 kept at the Hermitage, under the inventory ʻonds-6529.

Location

The Roman Amphitheater

The ancient arenas of Arles then hosted bullfights whose atmosphere Van Gogh repeatedly evoked in his letters.

Subject

The spectators

The documentary title specifies the real center of interest: it is the stands and their occupants, not the action on the track.

Collection

̄oult-6529

From the Sergei Shchukin collection, the painting entered the Hermitage collections in 1931.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must make the crowd readable without drawing each face and preserve the large arches of the track and stands.

  • The figures cut in the very foreground
  • The yellow and green woman placed on the left
  • Rows of dark silhouettes high up
  • The large ocher opening of the track
  • Red accents distributed throughout the crowd
