À propos de l’œuvre

L'Arlésienne, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1888 -1889 · Arles

L'Arlésienne, Madame Ginoux with booksReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Marie Ginoux, owner of Café de la Gare, places her cheek on her hand in front of two books: a large portrait where the yellow of the background exalts the black of Arlesian costume.

Look at the work

Marie Ginoux between real presence and Arlesian type

Sitting three-quarters, Marie Ginoux turns her gaze to the left. Her elbow rests on the green table and her hand supports the cheek. The large white scarf, the blue-black bodice and the dark headdress cut out a very readable silhouette in front of the yellow background.

Two closed books and an open volume occupy the foreground. The wooden armchair appears behind the shoulder and bears the inscription "ARLESIENNE". Dark contours simplify shapes, while small pink, green and blue touches enliven the face.

This book version belongs to a group of two very close portraits of Marie Ginoux: the other, more quickly painted and kept at the Musée d'Orsay, shows an umbrella and gloves on the table.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Met precisely identifies the model as Marie Julien Ginoux, born in 1848, owner with her husband of the Café de la Gare frequented by Van Gogh.

01

A meditative pose

The cheek supported by the hand slows down the portrait. The sideways gaze and books suggest an absorbed presence rather than an official pose.

02

Three big colors

The yellow of the wall, the green of the table and the blue-black of the garment divide the canvas into free zones linked by the contours.

03

Books in the foreground

Their ocher, orange and light blue rectangles give a base to the figure and distinguish this version from the one on the umbrella.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Number 51.112.3 and reference F488 identify the large version of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and not the neighboring portrait kept in Paris.

Model

Marie Ginoux

With Joseph-Michel Ginoux, she ran the Café de la Gare, an establishment on Place Lamartine where Van Gogh stayed.

Variant

Books, not gloves

The Met's canvas can be recognized by the works on the table; the first version from the Musée d'Orsay presents an umbrella and gloves.

Collection

Lewisohn Legacy

The painting entered the Met in 1951 by the bequest of Sam A. Lewisohn and today bears inventory 51.112.3.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the large areas, the restrained expression of the face and the clear distinction between books, the table and clothing, without hardening the contours.

  • The left hand that supports the cheek
  • The triangular white scarf
  • The two books closed and the volume open
  • The slightly modulated yellow background
  • The inscription "ARLESIENNE" on the armchair
