Marie Ginoux isolated on a lemon background

Sitting three-quarters, she leans on the table and tilts her head slightly. His gloves and umbrella are spread out in the foreground, everyday objects made almost emblematic.

The bluish black of the dress contrasts with the light yellow of the background. The green table and the orange wood of the armchair close the palette with two powerful complements.

Van Gogh wrote to Theo that he had finally painted his Arlesian in an hour. The speed of the touches contrasts with the meditative pose and monumentality of a canvas more than 92 cm high.

Three observations specific to this painting

The Musée d'Orsay dates the portrait to early November 1888 and preserves it under RF 1952 6; it corresponds to F489/JH1625.

A pose that is both calm and tense

The cheek rests on the hand, but the elbow, fingers and black folds form sharp angles. Meditation does not erase the energy of drawing.

Black builds with blue

Van Gogh himself describes a "black, black black" garment loaded with raw Prussian blue. Cold reflections prevent the dress from becoming an empty mass.

A monumental popular figure

The model is isolated from any real interior. The large scale, yellow background and simplified objects transform Marie Ginoux into an emblematic Provençal figure.
