Look at the work

The painter observes himself with a blue eye and a green eye

The face is turned three-quarters, but the gaze returns directly to the viewer. The wide brim of the hat frames the forehead and ear, while a thin red border cuts out the pale garment.

Around the head, the turquoise blue dashes are spaced apart and reveal the clear preparation. Their rhythm responds to the yellow touches of the hat, the hatching of the face and the red hairs of the beard.

Self-portrait with a straw hat is an oil on cardboard measuring 40.9 × 32.8 cm painted in Paris in August - September 1887. The work F469/JH1310 is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0164V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum explains that the current appearance is lighter than the original composition: the purple pigment of the preparation and background has largely faded. The desired contrast between purple and yellow is therefore no longer entirely visible.

01

Two eyes of different colors stop the gaze

One appears blue, the other green. This voluntary opposition dialogues with the orange yellows of the hat and beard rather than with a search for naturalistic complexion.

02

Cardboard remains an economical and visible support

Van Gogh chose a less expensive alternative than canvas. The preparation and the intervals between the keys directly contribute to the brightness of the portrait.

03

The vanished purple modifies our reading

Some pink marks remain on the shoulder, but the formerly purple background must have further strengthened the yellow hat. The sheet takes this material development into account.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F469/JH1310, inventory s0164V1962 and the 40.9 × 32.8 cm format identify this precise self-portrait among the numerous straw hat tests carried out in Paris.

Model

Painting your own face to practice

In Paris, Van Gogh multiplied self-portraits: the mirror offered him a model that was always available and avoided the cost of an exposure session.

Color

A purple-yellow contrast now attenuated

Museum analysis shows purple pigment has faded. The work therefore no longer presents all the chromatic intensity calculated in 1887.

Clothing

A summer outfit highlighted in red

The straw hat, light shirt and red piping give the portrait a luminous appearance, different from the dark jackets of other Parisian effigies.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the very large hat, the blue and green asymmetry of the eyes, the hatching of the face, the red beard, the blue touches of the background and the red border of the garment.

  • The large yellow hat with visible brushstrokes
  • Blue eye and green eye
  • The red beard built in small touches
  • The cream background punctuated with turquoise blue
  • The red border on the light clothing
