Look at the work

A clear self-portrait, constructed like a study of colors

The hat occupies almost the entire upper width and projects a curved border above the forehead. The very narrow face descends towards the red beard, while the jacket opens into two large lapels streaked with blue, purple, yellow and green.

Van Gogh limits traditional shadows. Rather, it juxtaposes cold and warm accents: blue versus orange in the beard, purple versus yellow on the hat, turquoise versus beige in the background.

This Self-portrait with a straw hat was painted in Paris in 1887 on a canvas measuring 40.6 × 31.8 cm. The work F365v/JH1354 is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 67.187.70a.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Met presents this portrait as one of Van Gogh's Parisian research on neo-impressionist technique and color theory. The support provides additional data: the self-portrait covers the reverse of an ancient peasant study.

01

The hat functions like a large yellow disc

Its purple, green and orange curves give volume to the straw without using a conventional brown pattern.

02

The face is crossed by opposite colors

Red, blue, yellow and green hatching follows the temples, cheeks and beard, making the skin lively rather than uniform.

03

The background shows the rhythm of the hand

The turquoise dashes are spaced on a beige preparation; they form a light vibration that does not compete with the silhouette.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory 67,187,70a designates the self-portrait painted side; on the other side is The Potato Peeler, an 1885 study numbered 67,187,70b. The two works therefore physically share the same canvas.

Economy

Van Gogh reuses an old canvas

In Paris, his means are limited. Here he returns a peasant study carried out in the Netherlands in order to use the other side for a new portrait research.

Model

The mirror replaces a paid model

Van Gogh explains that he bought a mirror good enough to work on himself, a practical solution which allows him to multiply figure exercises.

Collection

Legacy Adelaide Milton de Groot

The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1967 by the bequest of Adelaide Milton de Groot and is today exhibited under number 67.187.70a.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the ample silhouette of the hat, the asymmetrical eyes, the colored hatching of the face, the very light lapels and the turquoise dashes spaced in the background.

  • The large yellow hat
  • Blue-green eyes
  • Beard with red and blue hatching
  • The light lapels of the jacket
  • The turquoise dashes of the beige background
