Autoportrait, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait with gray felt hat, F296Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

In this little Parisian self-portrait, Van Gogh gives himself the look of an elegant bourgeois: pinkish gray jacket, light tie and felt hat, all painted in an unusually pale range of blue, pink and gray.

Look at the work

A self-portrait of Parisian elegance

The figure stands out against a blue-gray background covered with quick touches. The light hat occupies almost the entire width of the cardboard and casts a light shadow on the forehead and eyes.

The blue contours of the jacket, collar and tie organize an outfit with very similar shades. Only the orange beard provides a warm contrast and leads the eye towards the face.

Van Gogh uses his Parisian self-portraits to experiment. Here, he abandons very strong oppositions and works on a pastel harmony which also allows him to represent himself as a suitably dressed man.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum dates this small box from the summer of 1887 and keeps it under s0156V1962; its references are F296/JH1210.

01

A deliberately pastel palette

Light blue, pearl gray, salmon pink and lilac meet in the background as in the costume. The red beard becomes the only frankly warm home.

02

Eyes transformed by color

Van Gogh had green eyes, but he paints them here gray blue in order to integrate them into the general harmony of the portrait.

03

The cardboard left perceptible

The material remains thin in places and the small touches do not completely erase the support. This economy is suitable for the 19 × 14.1 cm format.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice emphasizes the elegant outfit, the pastel range and the voluntary modification of eye color.

Support

An oil on cardboard

The lightweight and inexpensive support allows Van Gogh to multiply face tests without engaging a large canvas.

Appearance

A bourgeois image

The felt-tip pen, the neat jacket and the tie make up a respectable presentation, very far from the workshop blouse.

Color

Blue gray eyes

The artist sacrifices the accuracy of his green eyes to the coherence of the palette, a precise example of his chromatic freedom.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the values very close to the costume and the background, the delicate modeling of the face and the measured contrast of the orange beard.

  • The large gray felt hat
  • Blue gray eyes
  • The orange beard in brief touches
  • The blue contours of the jacket
  • The slightly cloudy blue-gray background
