Autoportrait, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · August -September 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait with straw hat, F469Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Dressed in a light summer outfit and wearing a large straw hat, Van Gogh paints himself in three quarters; his two eyes, one blue and the other green, emerge from a network of small touches of turquoise, pink and ocher.

Look at the work

A face observed in the light of Paris

The light bust stands out against a now cream background, covered with blue and green dashes. The hat forms a large yellow halo around the forehead and casts a light shadow over the eyes.

Van Gogh seeks neither the official pose nor the academic finish. Beard, skin, shirt and background are constructed by separate touches whose directions accompany the volumes.

Unable to regularly pay for models, Van Gogh uses his own face as a testing ground. This Parisian portrait allows him to simultaneously study physiognomy, complementary contrasts and a freer touch.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum instructions identify this oil on 40.9 × 32.8 cm cardboard under s0164V1962, F469/JH1310.

01

Two different colored eyes

The eye on the left in the image appears blue, the other green. This discreet asymmetry gives the gaze a particularly vivid presence.

02

A formerly purple background

The museum indicates that the purple pigment of the preparation has largely faded. This purple originally formed a more distinct contrast with the yellow of the hat.

03

Cardboard as an economic support

Van Gogh chooses here a less expensive solution than canvas. The small touches of the preparatory layer directly contribute to the surface effect.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The dating, support and evolution of colors are documented by the official notice of the Van Gogh Museum.

Support

An oil painted on cardboard

The artist covers this economic support with a preparation punctuated with purple before placing the portrait on it.

Color

A contrast partially disappeared

The purple at the bottom has faded over time; a few pink marks in the shoulder also testify to a once more intense range.

Look

One blue eye, one green eye

This chromatic difference, noted by the museum, animates a face constructed with short touches rather than a smooth pattern.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must maintain the lightness of the hold, the vibration of the separate keys and the asymmetry of the eyes, while respecting the current documented state of the colors.

  • The large yellow straw hat
  • Blue eye and green eye
  • The red beard in brief touches
  • The red border of the jacket
  • The light background punctuated with blue-green
