Vincent van Gogh · 1887 · Asnières-sur-Seine

Look at the work

A monumental alley animated by a tiny silhouette

The trees form two rows that accompany the perspective, but their rhythm is not perfectly regular. The trunks on the right bend and close the vault, while those on the left let in more light.

The path is constructed by almost horizontal brushstrokes. In the background, a single figure and a few clear shapes give the scale of the avenue without transforming the landscape into a narrative scene.

Painted in 1887 in Asnières, this oil on canvas measuring 55 × 67 cm is listed F277/JH1316. The work belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh contrasts the dark verticals of the trees with the bright touches of the path. This simple structure produces rapid depth and an intermittent feeling of light beneath the leaves.

01

The trunks form a procession

Their repetition measures distance and leads the gaze to the small silhouette placed in the center of the aisle.

02

The ground advances in colored bands

Yellow, pink, white and brown are laid in short, transverse lines that suggest both shade and gaps of sunlight.

03

The foliage becomes a vault

Greens and yellows meet above the path, transforming the public avenue into an almost interior space.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Christie's notice precisely identifies this composition as L'Avenue au parc de Voyer-d'Argenson in Asnières, F277/JH1316, and distinguishes it from the other alley in the park referenced F276.

Subject

Voyer-d'Argenson Park

Asnières Park offered Van Gogh a modern walking motif, where the alignment of trees replaces urban architecture.

Detail

A barely visible figure

Christie's highlights the presence of the distant walker, protected by the canopy and essential for measuring the scale of the avenue.

Provenance

A documented history since 1912

The painting was notably written by MC Hoogendijk, Baron van Tuyll, Marcel Kapféré, Wildenstein and the Gilman collection.
