À propos de l’œuvre

Vue d'Amsterdam depuis la gare centrale, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · October 1885 · Amsterdam, Netherlands

View of Amsterdam from Central Station, F113Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Amsterdam's Singel unfolds under a yellow-green light, dominated by the dome of the Lutheran church. Barges, bridge, quays and houses are condensed into a small panel painted during Van Gogh's brief visit to the capital.

Look at the work

The Singel and its dome seen from the outskirts of the station

The Lutheran Rotunda forms the high point of the composition, slightly to the left of the center. The lower facades accompany it, while the canal and the quay open a diagonal towards the distance.

In the foreground, several dark boats are moored against stakes. Two small figures walk to the right and give a human scale to this very quickly painted urban view.

View of Amsterdam from the central station F113/JH944 is an oil on panel of 19 × 25.5 cm, painted in October 1885. Property of the P. and N. de Boer Foundation, it is exhibited at the Rijksmuseum on long-term loan duration since 2024.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Despite its small format, the painting brings together several shots: the nearby boats, the quay, the bridge, the canal and the dome. The greenish yellows unify the scene, while the black lines structure the architecture.

01

The dome immediately identifies Amsterdam

Its round shape breaks the horizontality of the house fronts. The dark lantern stands out against the clear sky and stabilizes the left half.

02

The platform leads towards the center

Its curve starts from the lower right angle and runs along the water. The two passers-by and the small markers punctuate this trajectory.

03

The boats anchor the foreground

Painted with almost black browns and greens, they give weight to the bottom of the painting and contrast their diagonals with the distant facades.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Rijksmuseum presents this view as one of three paintings loaned by the P. and N. de Boer Foundation in March 2024.

Visiting

A short stay in Amsterdam in October 1885

Van Gogh painted this view during a visit to the city during which he also visited the Rijksmuseum, then recently opened in his new building.

Pattern

The Singel and the Lutheran Church

The large dome is that of the Ronde Lutherse Kerk. It allows us to precisely identify the canal represented behind the boats and quays.

Collection

A loan entered at the Rijksmuseum in 2024

The P. and N. de Boer Foundation retains ownership of the painting. His loan allowed the Rijksmuseum to present this work alongside other paintings by Van Gogh.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the central dome, the bridge, the curve of the quay, the two passers-by, the dark barges and the particular range of yellow green and blue gray.

  • The dome of the Ronde Lutherse Kerk
  • The houses lined up along the Singel
  • The boats moored in the foreground
  • The curved quay and its two walkers
  • The blue-gray sky with green reflections
