Fleurs sauvages et chardons dans un vase, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Wild flowers and thistles in a vaseReproduction of oil painting on canvas
In a vase of red earth, Van Gogh brings together thistles, foliage and wild flowers in a deliberately undisciplined bouquet. The dark plant mass, crossed by blues and whites, stands out against a light green background streaked with horizontal touches.
Look at the work
A wild bouquet overflowing from its vase
The cylindrical vase occupies the bottom of the composition, slightly offset to the left. Long black stems soar to the upper edge, while serrated leaves and thistle flower heads form a compact core in the center.
An isolated red flower appears near the top, responding to the terracotta of the container. The chalky whites, cold blues and almost black greens are placed in thick touches; behind them, the water green background remains more regular and moves the bouquet forward.
Still life seeks neither symmetry nor floral elegance: it draws its strength from crossing stems, prickly leaves and colorful material.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work F763 can be recognized by its vertical format, the red-brown vase, the large yellow-green leaf placed on the right and the red flower suspended at the top of the bouquet.
A deliberately irregular silhouette
The stems come out on all sides and cut the bottom at different angles. This dispersion gives the bouquet the energy of a still living plant rather than the order of a decorative arrangement.
The vase as an anchor
Its simple shape and warm color stabilize the upper abundance. The black contours visually connect the container to the longer branches.
Colors separated by the key
Blues, whites and yellows are not melted. Each brushstroke remains readable and describes a flower, a leaf or a reflection of light at the same time.

Van Gogh arrived in Auvers in May 1890. In this last period, he alternated landscapes, portraits and several floral still lifes with very direct framing.
A work in a private collection
No public museum is currently listed for F763 in the catalogs viewed. The file therefore retains this cautious location without attributing to it an imaginary establishment.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
Reproduction must preserve the opposition between the light green background, the warm vase and the almost black heart of the bouquet, without smoothing the nervous contours of the leaves.
- The red flower isolated in the upper part
- The large yellow-green leaf that rises to the right
- Blue and white thistles in the center of the bouquet
- The red-brown vase with visible black contours
