The high stern of a stranded ship faces the viewer and occupies almost the entire vertical axis. Its rigging is cut out in a gray-blue sky, while the mud, boats and harbor buildings extend around its dark hull. Monet takes a frontal, low viewpoint that gives a maritime working motif an almost monumental presence.

Look at the work

The black stern transforms the basin at low tide into a portrait of a ship

The central hull is seen almost from the front. Its black mass, tightened at the base and wider in height, bears a red anchor which becomes a very visible accent. Above, the mast, yards and ropes create a complex but airy network on the sky.

The foreground shows wet ground, streaked with gray, brown and cold reflections. Work objects and small boats line the large boat. On the right, the constructions of the quay and other masts establish the port context without competing with the main silhouette.

The ship is motionless on the mud, but its ropes and the touches of the sky still give it the momentum of the open sea.

A vertical format dictated by the rigging

The mast leads the view from the hull to the upper edge. This continuity gives the boat an imposing size and distinguishes the composition of the more usual horizontal maritime panoramas.

A deliberately asymmetrical frontality

The stern provides a powerful axis, but boats, docks and buildings are not distributed equally. This imbalance avoids the emblem effect and maintains the impression of an observation taken in the port.

Compound blacks rather than flat

The hull mixes deep blue, brown, gray and lighter reflections. The red anchor and some luminous marks reveal its structure; a uniform black would remove its volume and its relationship with wet mud.

However, its contours are not perfectly closed: they meet neighboring boats, ropes and reflections. These transitions integrate it into the port despite its monumentality.

The rigging must remain thin and legible

The masts and ropes intersect on a clear sky without becoming a mechanical framework. Their thickness and variations give the sensation of a real construction observed from a distance.

Matter03

The vase reflects a cold light

The ground in the foreground combines brown, gray-purple, blue and some almost white areas. Horizontal touches suggest humidity and anchor the ship in low tide.

Dated 1868, this oil on canvas measuring 61.5 × 46.5 cm is kept at the Kunst Museum Winterthur under number G.2000.13. It corresponds to Wildenstein number 118.

Monet observes the ship from the open basin, among the boats and port facilities. The pattern combines the complex architecture of the rigging with the changing textures of sky and mud.

Signed Cl. Monet lower right

The Kunst Museum Winterthur notice records the signature in the lower right corner. It visually belongs to the dark tones of the foreground and accompanies the dating from 1868.

Collection03

Donation from the Wolfer family in 2000

The museum credit indicates that Beat Wolfer, Marianne Wolfer and Silvia Largo-Wolfer donated the work in 2000. It has since been included in the G.2000.13 inventory in the Winterthur collection.
