Look at the work

An interior recomposed of memory

The woman in the pink dress seen from behind occupies the center of the foreground. On the left, two women lean against the sofa; on the right, a man in a black hat leans towards the table and creates a strong diagonal.

The green walls carry a few frames and a yellow lamp. The furniture remains basic: table, stools and bench are drawn by thick black lines, almost like in a colorful sketch.

Painted in Arles in October 1888, Le Lupanar is an oil on canvas measuring 33 × 41 cm, listed F478/JH1599. The Barnes Foundation keeps it under number BF104 and exhibits it in room 14.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Barnes Foundation explains that Van Gogh painted this scene from memory, encouraged by Gauguin. The composition favors types, gestures and atmosphere rather than an exact survey of the place.

01

A table as a pivot

The round board brings the characters together and organizes their movements. The backs, arms and hats all point towards this center.

02

Silhouettes defined by color

Pink, yellow, red and black quickly distinguish the figures. The faces are not very detailed, but the attitudes are enough to characterize each presence.

03

A blue hidden under the greens

According to the museum, Van Gogh used an underlying blue wash to set up the atmosphere. It still shows through several passages of the wall and furniture.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The institutional notice documents the working method, the context with Gauguin and the current location of this small painting.

Memory

A scene painted outside the location

Van Gogh does not look for a snapshot: he subsequently reconstructs the women, clients and soldiers observed in the establishments of Arles.

Dialogue

An experience linked to Gauguin

The joint work of the two painters in the fall of 1888 encouraged Van Gogh to move away from direct observation and to compose more memory.

Museum

BF104 at the Barnes Foundation

The painting is currently visible throughout Room 14 on the south wall of the foundation in Philadelphia.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the energy of the sketch, the black contours, the compact figures and the blue which is flush under the greens without smoothing the material too much.

  • The pink dress seen from behind
  • Soldiers in red caps
  • The green round table
  • The man leaning over in the black hat
  • The couple embraced at the bottom
