Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1903 · Hamilton · W1587
Waterloo Bridge stretches in a blue-purple mist, punctuated by small orange touches that signal light and traffic. Industrial chimneys dissolve behind the apron. This 65.1 × 100 cm oil on canvas, kept at the McMaster Museum of Art, is Wildenstein 1587.

Look at the work
The bridge crosses the canvas in the middle and leaves plenty of room for the Thames. Its arches are visible by degrees: the first stands out in a deeper blue, while the following ones are gradually lost to the right. The city at the bottom is reduced to a few vertical masses and chimneys.
The sun effect does not take the shape of a disk. It appears in the pink, yellow and orange accents placed on the bridge then taken up in the water. The cold dominant thus remains crossed by heat, as if light filtered between smoke and steam rather than falling directly on objects.
W1587 makes the sun feel without showing it: a few warm touches are enough to transform the blue mist and set the entire Thames into vibration.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The McMaster Museum of Art documents a 1903 oil on canvas measuring 65.1 × 100 cm, donated by Herman H. Levy in 1984. The 1984.007.0043 inventory corresponds to Wildenstein number 1587.
Chimneys, smoke, bridge traffic and boats are fully on topic. Monet does not remove the landscape industry: he observes how it changes the color and density of London's atmosphere.
The museum has presented the work in several exhibitions devoted to series and industry, notably at Ordrupgaard and the Art Gallery of Ontario. These comparisons allow you to directly compare your choices to other Waterloo Bridges.

Each opening has a different degree of readability. A faithful reproduction must maintain this progression, from the more sustained blues on the left to the shapes almost absorbed by the atmosphere.
Oranges and roses are rare but decisive. They must neither be removed by a dominant blue, nor become too saturated to the point of breaking the unity of the fog.
The foreground combines mauve, blue gray, pink and beige in horizontal touches. Their alternation gives the sensation of moving water without creating regular waves.
Documented benchmarks
The McMaster Museum of Art documents an oil on canvas from 1903, 65.1 × 100 cm, inventory 1984.007.0043 and catalog Wildenstein 1587.
The painting was donated by Herman H. Levy, OBE., in 1984. It belongs to the major core of the European collection of the Hamilton Museum.
The museum recalls the scale of the series: Monet uses a stable pattern to measure ever-changing conditions of light, smoke and fog.
The dimensions of 65.1 × 100 cm, the Canadian inventory and the blue-purple range crossed by warm touches isolate this version from other sun effects.
