Look at the work

Bridges, trains, walkers and boats share the same moment

The infrastructure is stacked on three levels: the railway embankment and footbridge at the top, the arched bridge in the middle, then the river and boats in the foreground. The large vertical piers maintain this complex construction.

The clear curve of the dock starts from the left corner and leads directly to the woman with the red parasol. This warm little accent balances the yellow boats and stands out among the blues, greens and grays of the water.

Les Ponts d'Asnières is an oil on canvas of 53.5 × 67 cm painted during the summer of 1887. Referenced F301/JH1327, the work belongs to the EG Bührle Collection Foundation under number 50 and is presented at the Kunsthaus Zürich under BU 0050.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum links this work to a triptych by Asnières which brings Van Gogh closer to impressionism. It combines a modern subject, a low angle, a free touch and light colors; the steam of the train brings immediate movement.

01

The train closes the composition from above

Locomotive, wagons and smoke form a dark horizontal band, cut by the orange and yellow structures of the bridge.

02

The red woman becomes the human center

Its tiny silhouette is at the point where the dock tightens. It allows you to measure the imposing scale of piers and aprons.

03

Water multiplies the colored verticals

Under the arches, blue, green, red and yellow reflections fragment the Seine and extend the bridge structures downwards.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F301/JH1327 belongs to the series painted on the banks of the Seine in Asnières in 1887. The work is numbered 50 in the EG Bührle Collection and BU 0050 in its long-term repository at the Kunsthaus Zürich.

Series

The Asnières triptych

Van Gogh brings this complex view closer to a quieter scene of boats and the Mermaid Restaurant. Together, these works explore several points of view on suburban leisure and modernity.

Modernity

A landscape crossed by the railway

The train, steam, metal piers and bridges are not relegated to the background: they form the main architecture of the composition.
