The Lumberjack after Millet, F670Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A lumberjack raises his ax in front of a stump in a blue-green clearing; the very narrow format transforms its movement into a long vertical, freely interpreted after Millet.

Look at the work

The ax raised in a narrow clearing

The worker occupies the center of the canvas, one leg advanced near the stump. His raised arm and the handle of the tool lead the gaze to the upper edge.

The thin trunks and turquoise touches of the undergrowth surround the silhouette. On the ground, cut branches, shavings and ocher paths give the scene a depth without a clear horizon.

This painting belongs to the group of interpretations made from small wood engravings reproducing Millet's Works of the Fields. Van Gogh compared them to the colorful arrangement a musician would make of an existing work.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum keeps Le Bûcheron under inventory s0170V1962. The references F670/JH1886 and the dimensions of 44 × 26.2 cm make it possible to distinguish this version.

01

A format that amplifies the gesture

The canvas is almost twice as tall as it is wide. The body, the raised arm and the trunks exploit this verticality up to the edges.

02

A range of greenish blues

Figure, trees and clearing share neighboring tones. Darker contours and ocher accents are enough to separate the shapes.

03

The strain as a point of impact

Placed to the right of the worker, the light stump visually receives all the energy from the ax and stabilizes the lower part.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum specifies that Van Gogh painted in a short time ten subjects taken from the same series of small engravings after Jean-François Millet.

Interpretation

From monochrome to color

Engraving guides the shapes, but the turquoise, light blue and yellow-green range is designed by Van Gogh.

Method

Loyalty without servility

He carefully takes up the small image while considering the final painting as an autonomous polychrome interpretation.

Catalog

F670 and JH1886

These numbers avoid confusion with other forest scenes and several figures of workers painted in Saint-Rémy.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the vertical momentum of the axe, the blue outline of the figure and the turquoise shades of the wood, without confusing the stump, the ground and the background.

  • Arm raised above head
  • The dark handle of the axe
  • The light stump on the right
  • The turquoise trunks of the undergrowth
  • The ocher touches of the ground
