The Drinkers, after Honoré DaumierReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Four ages of life gather around a table and bring glass, cup or pitcher to their lips. Van Gogh transposes an engraving after Honoré Daumier into color and gives the scene an atmosphere that is both ironic and dark.

Look at the work

Four drinkers gathered around a green jug

A pale child lies almost horizontally in the foreground, his cup raised towards his mouth. Behind him, two men wearing black top hats surround a red face seen in profile. Their gestures converge towards the containers.

The large green table crosses the bottom of the canvas and carries a dark jug in the center. Beyond the figures, the landscape remains open: a few trees, fireplaces and a milky blue sky painted in volutes prevent the scene from becoming a simple interior.

Bodies of different sizes form a progression from childhood to old age, united by the same repetitive act of drinking.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work 1953.178 can be recognized by its four ages, the two top hats, the elongated child and the dark green jug placed in the center.

01

A borrowed image, an invented color

Van Gogh starts from a black and white engraving after Daumier. The greens, blues and purples therefore belong to his own interpretation.

02

The child's diagonal

The young drinker lying at the edge of the table breaks the verticality of the three adults. This unstable position gives the scene an almost burlesque tension.

03

An evocative green

The Art Institute notes that the dominant greenish could evoke absinthe, an alcoholic drink then famous for its color.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must maintain the position of each container, the deliberately distorted silhouettes and the dominant green which connects figures, table and landscape.

  • Pale child lying at table
  • The two black top hats and the hollow faces
  • The dark green jug in the center of the composition
  • The light blue swirls that animate the sky
