Look at the work

A café open all night, painted like a furnace

Van Gogh represents the room of the Café de la Gare, Place Lamartine in Arles, where he was then staying. Owner Joseph-Michel Ginoux stands in white near the billiards table; five dozing customers occupy the tables along the walls and a couple appears in the embrasure at the back.

The perspective of the floor rushes towards the door with willful brutality. The billiards table, placed at an angle in the center, seems to slide towards the viewer. The blood red of the walls confronts the greens of the furniture, ceiling and counter, while the yellow halos of the lamps give the air an almost physical vibration.

Van Gogh does not seek the picturesque atmosphere of an Arlesian establishment: he uses color and perspective to express a place where one can, in his words, "break the bank, go crazy or commit a crime".

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

In letter 676 to Theo, Van Gogh explains that he worked three nights and wanted to express "the terrible human passions" through red and green.

An unstable diagonal

The floorboards and the edges of the billiards table converge towards the back, but their exaggerated angles make the room slippery and difficult to live in.

Red versus green

The complements do not balance peacefully: they collide in the walls, the billiards table, the counter and the shadows of the characters.

Four artificial suns

Each lamp is surrounded by yellow and orange rings. These halos punctuate the ceiling and accentuate the oppressive heat of the room.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Number 1961.18.34 and references F463/JH1575 identify Yale's large canvas, distinct from the watercolor drawing F1463 made immediately afterwards.

Van Gogh claims to have painted at night and then slept during the day in order to directly observe the lighting and late visitors.

Provenance

From Morozov to Yale

The painting belonged to collector Ivan Morozov before being acquired by Stephen Carlton Clark, who bequeathed it to Yale in 1961.
