Wheat field behind Saint-Paul, F722Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A small enclosed field turns pale under heavy gray clouds, while the Alpilles and a few red roofs close the horizon behind the asylum wall.
Look at the work
The daily field of Saint-Paul under an unstable sky
Van Gogh observes from the asylum a wheat field surrounded by a wall, a motif which he uses throughout the seasons. In this small late canvas, the discolored ears fill the foreground; a dark band marks the enclosure, then red houses and hills appear in the distance.
The sky occupies almost half of the composition. Its white, blue and gray clouds are shaped by large loops that respond to the undulations of the mountains. On the ground, the shorter, vertical touches give the wheat a dry, tight texture.
The modest scale of the painting concentrates a great atmospheric tension: the field remains luminous while the sky seems to close above it.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
F722 stands out from the reaper scenes by the absence of a figure, its massive clouds and its exceptionally small format.
A field without characters
No worker structures the space. Touch variations in wheat become the real movement in the foreground.
The Asylum Wall
The dark line in the middle of the canvas cuts the field of the houses and recalls the physical limit of the place where Van Gogh stayed.
Clouds in rolls
The sky is constructed by wide superimposed curves, with passages of clear canvas which give the masses a turbulent appearance.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F722/JH1872 designates the small Richmond canvas painted at the end of 1889, distinct from the large enclosed fields and versions with reapers.
The field of Saint-Paul
Van Gogh could observe the field surrounded by a wall from his room and made a suite showing the changes in season, culture and light.
24 × 33.7 cm
Its reduced dimensions make it a particularly condensed study among the landscapes of Saint-Rémy.
Paul Mellon
The painting belongs to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond and comes from the collection of Paul and Rachel Mellon.
