Look at the work

Arles between irises and wheat

Van Gogh lowers the viewpoint to give the irises in the foreground a monumental presence. Their leafy leaves and sinuous flowers form a dark band, immediately followed by a vast yellow and green field strewn with small white touches.

A row of trees closes the field, then the red roofs and bell towers of Arles appear in the distance. Each depth has its rhythm: tight curves in the irises, short lines in the cereals, round touches in the trees and wider material in the sky.

The landscape is both panoramic and very close: a few irises occupy as much visual space as the entire city on the horizon.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh here seeks clear contrasts between purple and yellow, the red of roofs and the green of trees, then the blue of the sky.

01

An iris frieze

The flowers are cut by the bottom edge and unfold laterally. This close framing recalls the decorative organization of Japanese prints.

02

Transformed colors

Irises were originally more red-purple. Part of the red pigment has faded with light, now allowing blue to dominate more.

03

A tiny city

Bell towers and roofs occupy a narrow strip. Their small scale amplifies the luminous extent of the field.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory s0037V1962 and references F409/JH1416 identify this view from May 1888, distinct from the iris studies painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889.

Color

Irises that were once more purple

Examination of the areas protected by the frame revealed a better preserved red component, making it possible to study the historical discoloration of the work.

Technique

Prussian blue contours

Analyzes showed that Van Gogh reinforced certain contours of trees and irises with fine lines of Prussian blue.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must bring out the irises without crushing the distant planes and precisely vary the touches of the field, the trees and the sky.

  • Irises cut by the bottom edge
  • The leaves drawn like long blades
  • The contrast of purple with the yellow field
  • The row of green trees and red roofs
  • The two tiny bell towers on the horizon
