Look at the work

The harvest crosses the field to the distant village

The canvas is organized in wide strips: the wheat in the foreground, the ocher and green plots in the middle, then the village and the hills under the sky. The workers and sheaves break this horizontality with a series of erect shapes.

The harvester located towards the center is distinguished by his light shirt. Around him, the sheaves and silhouettes are shaped by thick, curved and directional touches which give the field continuous movement.

Painted in Auvers-sur-Oise in July 1890, the Wheat Fields with Harvester are an oil on canvas measuring 73.7 × 93 cm, F559/JH1479. The work is kept at the Toledo Museum of Art under number 1935.4.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Toledo museum emphasizes the sculptural material of the touch and the expressive use of color. Van Gogh starts from the observed landscape, but intensifies the yellows and blues in order to give more strength to the harvest.

The sheaves mark the entire depth

Their conical shapes gradually diminish towards the village, providing a measure of distance across the field.

The sky takes up almost half the format

Its large turquoise tablecloth, interrupted by a few white clouds, lightens the density of the wheat and opens the landscape towards the hills.

Brushstrokes follow the work of the field

They curve around the sheaves, become shorter in the stubble, and calm into horizontal bands in the distance.

The official title of the museum, the dating from 1890 and the number 1935.4 correct the old, overly general presentation. This scene belongs to Van Gogh's last weeks in Auvers, and not to the Arles harvest of 1888.
