Green wheat field with cypress, F719Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A large field of still green wheat extends in front of a dark cypress, a few houses and the blue Alpilles. Despite thick and nervous material, Van Gogh obtains here a remarkably stable landscape, constructed by long horizontal bands.

Look at the work

A calm landscape dominated by a cypress tree

The foreground spikes are indicated by long green, yellow and turquoise lines that tilt in several directions. A narrow strip of darker vegetation marks the boundary of the field.

In the center right, the cypress forms the main vertical in front of a light roof. Blue hills, round trees and streaked skies overlap in regular planes up to the upper edge.

The canvas remains animated down to the smallest ear, but the continuous horizon, the central cypress and the parallel bands give the whole thing an unusual stability.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The National Gallery in Prague keeps this painting under the inventory O 3208. It measures 73 × 92.5 cm and bears F719/JH1725.

01

The cypress organizes the entire width

Its dark silhouette is placed slightly to the right of center. It visually connects the field, buildings, hills and sky without dividing the composition in two.

02

The ears create an almost tactile relief

The thick oil lines intersect and overlap in the foreground. This pastose writing gives the field a truly raised surface, perceptible even in a general view.

03

The horizontal planes soothe the touch

Field, hedge, hills and sky form successive bands. This structure calms the oblique gestures of the brush and explains the balance highlighted by the museum notice.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Green wheat field with cypress F719/JH1725 was painted in June 1889 during Van Gogh's stay in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.

Location

The fields around Saint-Paul

The motif brings together the cultivated plain, a small building, a cypress tree and the Alpilles. Van Gogh could find these elements while working in the immediate vicinity of the asylum.

Technique

A scientifically examined painting

The National Gallery in Prague studied the work using imaging and pigment analyses. This research confirms the layered construction and material diversity of the key.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the weft of the ears, the almost black cypress, the small constructions, the blue hills and the many yellow and turquoise shades of the field.

  • The long crossed lines in the wheat in the foreground
  • The dark vertical of the cypress in the center right
  • The small light roof placed behind the field
  • The blue and turquoise bands of the sky and the Alpilles
