Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Wheat field with crowsReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Three paths sink into a yellow field under an almost black blue sky, while a flight of crows crosses the horizon. Van Gogh constructs this famous image as a vast panorama where the direction of the keys makes the landscape unstable and powerful.

Look at the work

Three open paths under a busy sky

The central path starts from the lower edge and is visually interrupted in the wheat. Two other tracks run along the sides of the canvas. No village or character indicates a destination; only black crows, divided into irregular silhouettes, cross the horizon line.

The yellow of the field is laid in long, thick touches that change direction around the paths. The sky combines deep blues with almost black bands. Between the two, an undulating green line separates the plain from the storm and intensifies the contrasts.

The strength of the painting comes less from a story than from its contradictory directions: the paths advance, the wheat undulates and the crows disperse the gaze.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work of the Van Gogh Museum can be recognized by its 103 cm double square format, its three paths, its yellow field and the flight of crows on a dark blue background.

01

Paths with no visible exit

The three tracks create several competing entrances into the landscape. The central path does not reach any specific point, which keeps the composition open.

02

A radical contrast

The orange-yellow of wheat clashes with the very dark blue of the sky. The thin green band of the horizon acts as a hinge between these two areas.

03

An irregular flight

Crows form neither line nor homogeneous group. Their black signs, of different sizes, punctuate the sky and prolong the agitation of brushstrokes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum preserves Cornfield with Crows under number s0149V1962. The painting is cataloged F779 and JH2117.

Myth

This is not the last painting

The painting is often presented as Van Gogh's final work, but the museum recalls that he still created several brighter paintings after this one.

Format

A panorama of 50.2 × 103 cm

The double square allows the field and sky to be extended by more than a meter, giving the landscape an enveloping presence.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must maintain the breadth of the panorama, the contrast of sky and wheat, as well as the irregular placement of each crow without added dramatization.

  • The three paths and their blue-green borders
  • The long yellow and orange touches of the field
  • The undulating green stripe placed on the horizon
  • The number, scale and position of crows in the sky
