Poppy field W593hand painted reproduction

A carpet of red poppies rises from the lower edge towards a village partially hidden by trees. A thin poplar stands on the left, while a softer group occupies the center under a vast blue sky covered with white and gray clouds. Signed and dated 1880, this vertical format of 73 × 60 cm belongs to the Emil Bührle collection, on deposit at the Kunsthaus Zürich under number BU 0180, and corresponds to Wildenstein 593.

Look at the work

The red field leads from the foreground to the houses of Vétheuil

The vertical format gives the flowers an unusual depth. The poppies are larger and more scattered in the lower part, then tighten as the land joins the buildings; this reduction builds space without a marked path.

The trees stand between the field and the village. Their emerald greens, blues and grays reveal some walls and roofs, while the sky receives wider and lighter touches which give moving light to the entire scene.

Poppies are never described petal by petal: their bright reds become rhythm units that bring the field closer together, distribute light and lead to the village.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A foreground filled with red signs

Touches of vermilion vary in size and orientation. Their irregularity prevents the repetitive decorative effect and gives the field the appearance of vegetation crossed by the air.

02

Trees that mask rather than frame

The large central bouquet hides part of the architecture. This superposition makes the scene inhabited without transforming the houses into the main subject.

03

A sky built by colored plates

Blues, pearl gray, roses and creams juxtapose in diffuse clouds. Their movement responds to the touches of the field while keeping the upper half bright.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image is kept at its native definition of 982 × 1,200 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the vertical format and depth of field

The large expanse of flowers is essential at W593. Horizontal cropping would reduce movement from nearby poppies to homes.

Color02

Keep the red bright but discontinuous

Accents should remain separated by greens and blues. A uniform red stripe would remove the feeling of light and depth.

Matter03

Keep the village partially hidden

Buildings appear between trunks and foliage. Making them too clear would shift the interest of the field towards an architectural view.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kunsthaus Zürich documents Poppy Field, also linked to the title Poppy Field near Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 73 × 60 cm, BU 0180 and Wildenstein 593.

Location01

The surroundings of Vétheuil

Monet lived in the village from 1878 to 1881. Fields, hillsides and houses visible through the trees became regular motifs of this period.

Identification02

Wildenstein 593, signed and dated lower left

The signature "Claude Monet 1880", the vertical format and the layout of the village behind the poplars make it possible to identify this precise version.

Collection03

Emil Bührle Collection, long-term loan

The work is numbered BU 0180 and has been presented as a long-term deposit at the Kunsthaus Zürich since 2021.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 593 version
  • The large vertical field of poppies
  • The thin poplar on the left
  • The houses of Vétheuil behind the trees
