À propos de l’œuvre

Chaumières au soleil, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · February 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Cottages in the sunReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Under a pink sky, a row of cottages with green roofs stands out in front of a yellow sun. Van Gogh paints this evocation of Brabant from Saint-Rémy: the landscape of the North returns through memory, but in the light colors of the South.

Look at the work

A memory of Brabant crossed by the Provençal sun

The houses form a tight strip in the middle of the canvas. Their thatched roofs, highlighted with blue-black contours, rise and fall like a series of waves. Chimneys allow blue smoke to rise with very visible curves.

On the left, the sun is set against the edge of a roof. In the foreground, a white path goes around the buildings and a blue figure advances to the right. The pink sky and the green of the stubble create an agreement deliberately far removed from a naturalistic landscape.

The canvas combines remembered Dutch architecture with a pink, green and blue palette which fully belongs to the research of Saint-Rémy.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work BF136 can be recognized by its vertical format, its row of green roofs, the yellow sun placed on the left and the small blue figure in the foreground.

01

Roofs like a mountain range

The sharp slopes of the cottages follow one another across the entire width. The dark outline welds them into a continuous frieze and gives the village an immediately readable silhouette.

02

Smoke extends architecture

The blue arabesques come out of the chimneys then unfold in the pink sky. They enliven the upper part without masking the clarity of the background.

03

A recomposed memory

Van Gogh does not work in front of a Provençal village. It brings together the memory of Brabant cottages and a free color, constructed by complementary contrasts.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Barnes Foundation keeps this oil on canvas of 52 × 40.5 cm under the inventory BF136. Painted in Saint-Rémy in February 1890, it also bears the references F674 and JH1920.

Title

Houses and Figure · BF136

The Barnes Foundation presents the work under the English title Houses and Figure. The traditional French title Chaumières au soleil describes more precisely its thatched roofs and its solar disk.

Subject

A reminiscence of the North

The Barnes notice emphasizes that the landscape was painted during the stay at the Saint-Rémy asylum but that it evokes the cottages of Van Gogh's native Netherlands.

Format

52 × 40.5 cm

The institution's current measurements correct the slightly different figures released by certain old catalogs. The original composition is indeed vertical.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must retain the blue-black contours, the green stubble and the lightness of the pink sky, while keeping the sun, the smoke and the small figure legible.

  • The yellow sun placed at the edge of the first roof
  • The succession of green cottages with dark contours
  • The blue fumes rippling in the pink sky
  • The blue figure and the clear path in the foreground
