A floral waterfall descends from shadow to light

The red geraniums occupy the summit and appear to recede into the dark background. Below, the green foliage connects the hydrangea pots, the lilac basket and the small orange flowers. This plant architecture gradually widens as it approaches the foreground.

Large white and pink peonies form the brightest area. Some still rest among the leaves, others are placed directly on the table with red flowers. Their petals are shaped by grays, mauves and warm touches that avoid any uniform white.

Botanical precision never immobilizes the bouquet: the lively touch makes the leaves sparkle, the clusters swell and the peonies move out of the shade.

A composition designed like a spill

The flowers are not enclosed in a single vase. Pots, basket and cut stems create several starting points, then the colored masses extend downward and outward.

The dark background amplifies every color difference

Reds, blues, pinks and whites appear with particular intensity against black brown. The leaves provide the transition and prevent the flowers from appearing isolated from each other.

A youthful work already attentive to temporary effects

The Cleveland Museum of Art places the painting in Monet's truly productive first year. The very blooming state of the flowers and the light running over the petals introduce the notion of fleeting transformation which will become central to his art.

Peonies are shaped by colors, not pure white

Pearl gray, pink, mauve, cream and brown follow one another between the petals. These gaps must remain legible to restore their volume and maturity.

The tight clusters of lilac, the soft balls of hydrangea and the large corollas of peonies are not built with the same gesture. This diversity makes the bouquet credible and alive.

The bottom retains warm passages

Browns, deep greens and muffled reds envelop the geraniums. A neutral black would remove depth and the gradual transition between shade and flowers.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1864, this oil on canvas measures 116.8 × 90.5 cm without frame. It is kept at the Cleveland Museum of Art under the 1953.155 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 20.

The museum notice identifies the large peonies in the foreground, the hydrangeas in pots, the lilacs placed in a basket and the red geraniums at the back. Their full development creates a deliberately unstable abundance.

A still life over a meter high

At 116.8 cm high, the canvas gives the flowers an almost life-size presence. The vertical format reinforces the movement which starts from the geraniums and descends towards the cut peonies.

A work acquired thanks to the Hanna Fund

The painting entered the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1953 as a donation from the Hanna Fund. The museum distributes it as part of its Open Access program.
