A pale path winds between large masses of purple and blue irises. The view is so high that it seems adopted from the Japanese bridge of Giverny: the flowers, leaves and ground unfold almost vertically. On this two-meter canvas, Monet works quickly, revealing in places the white preparation under the gestures green, mauve and turquoise.
Look at the work
The path starts in the lower part, narrows in the center then goes up to the left. Its light color is not uniform: pink, beige, blue and white mingle. This flexible line gives depth to the vertical format and separates the groups of flowers without enclosing them in fixed contours.
Irises form masses rather than bouquets described petal by petal. Blues and purples dominate, crossed by acidic greens and some warm accents. In the lower right corner, the keys become particularly fluid and swirling, as if the soil and vegetation were changing consistency.
The path brings distance, but the large layers of iris constantly bring the gaze back to the surface and to the material of the brush.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The National Gallery compares this view to a position on the Japanese bridge. The absence of horizon and the strong diving transform the garden into a vertical field where we hesitate between real depth and painted surface.
The path was laid before the flowery borders, which then pass over its edges. The white preparation remains visible in several places: it is part of the light and should not be filled artificially.
Purples, blues and greens are applied in frank, sometimes rough gestures. A faithful reproduction must regain this energy without smoothing the passages or transforming each flower into a regular decorative motif.
Reference image
The single reference image is provided by the National Gallery's official IIIF server. Its maximum public native definition is 601 × 800 px; it was converted into a real WebP without any artificial enlargement.
The height of 200.7 cm gives the floral masses an almost bodily scale. The narrow path becomes the only interval where the gaze can circulate between them.
Monet does not repeat a specific botanical form. A few touches of blue, purple or pink above the greens are enough to make the flowers appear in a moving whole.
The areas left uncovered lighten the quickest passages. They are neither gaps nor added reflections, but a material element of the construction of the painting.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern the Iris of the National Gallery, inventory NG6383 and Wildenstein 1829.
Painted around 1914 -1917, this oil on canvas measures 200.7 × 149.9 cm. It belongs to a group of approximately twenty iris views taken around the Giverny basin.
The National Gallery says the artist may not have considered the painting finished. It remained in his studio, then belonged to his son Michel Monet before moving to Katia Granoff.
The museum acquired the work from merchant Katia Granoff in 1967 thanks to Grant-in-Aid. It has since been numbered inventory NG6383.
